Position Description

The Assistant Cook will assist the Food Service Manager with the planning, directing, and coordinating of the Food Services Department of Harlem United in accordance with contractual requirements. In the absence of the food service manager, the assistant cook will be responsible for preparing and serving all meals for clients at the Adult Day Health Care Center and preparing the congregate meals for the Food and Nutrition Program.

Essential Job Functions

The following duties are mandatory requirements of the job:
  • Preparation and service of meals for clients.
  • Assist in the supervision of food production.
  • Maintain a safe and sanitary working environment according to the sanitary laws of the New York State Department of Health.
  • Adheres to portion control in the preparation of foods.
  • Assist in the training and supervision of food services staff and Volunteers.
  • Assist in the scheduling and monitoring of the time and attendance of food services staff and Volunteers.
  • In the absence of the food service manager, the assistant cook will be responsible for ordering, receiving, and controlling the inventory of all products. Maintains all records pertaining to ordering, receiving, and inventory in accordance with agency requirements. ADHC requirements.
  • Communicates and assists in resolving conflicts pertaining to the food service area.
  • Ensure that all surfaces are clean, the cafeteria is ready for the next day, and all appliances are in working order by the end of the day. If any repairs will affect operations for the next day, report it to the supervisor.
  • Must label, date, and store all leftover foods.
  • Must follow standardized recipes in the preparation of food meal.
  • Ensure the food and storage temperatures are documented.
  • Check in all food and non-food orders and ensure that all orders are stored away rotated.
  • Responsible for taking weekly inventory.
  • Report to supervisor any repairs needed.
Other Responsibilities

The following duties are to be performed as assigned by the supervisor:
  • Works with the Nutritionist and Supervisor to create weekly meal plans.
  • Follow-up with any other duties assigned by the Supervisor or the Vice President of the Adult Day Health Care Center.
Education and Certification

The Assistant Cook must have a minimum of three years of cooking experience in an institutional setting, providing meals for 50 or more. Must have a Food handler license.

The ideal candidate for this position should possess most or all the following in addition to the above-listed job responsibilities and educational/experience requirements:
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with peers.
  • Flexibility is essential.
  • Availability to work weekends and holidays when necessary.
