06/12/2025 The Assistant Cook for Torrington Intermediate School is responsible for assisting in meal production of the campus (approximately 1000 students). 6.5 hours per day, 32.5 hours per week, following the school calendar.

Qualifications:
  • High School diploma with two years relevant institutional cooking. Knowledge and skills in large quantity food handling, preparation and cooking. Good understanding of institutional kitchen operation/management. Familiarity with public school breakfast and lunch operation and guidelines.
  • Ability to communicate courteously, effectively and efficiently with a variety of individuals, including students, staff and administrators.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with peers, subordinates, and supervisors.
  • Dependability, punctuality and initiative are essential.
  • ServSafe Certified or working towards certification. Must have valid certification within 90 working days from date of hire or transfer.
Performance Responsibilities:
  • Assist the Cook in performing a wide range of cooking tasks associated with the preparation of student meals.
  • Ensure high standards of service and food quality; serve students/staff appetizing food.
  • Ensure that foods are maintained at proper temperatures for storing and serving.
  • Monitor all foods for quality of taste, texture and appearance.
  • Ensure that established health and safety procedures are followed. Keep abreast of changing requirements.
  • Assist in cleaning and inventory all equipment and supplies at the end of the school year.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Food Service Manager or Cook for his/her campus.
Physical Demand:
  • Constantly required to stand, walk, use hands.
  • Regularly required to talk and hear.
  • Frequently required to reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch
  • Frequently required to lift up to 50 pounds.
SALARY AND TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Ten-month work year, 182 days. Salary is $19.11 an hour, in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement and Memorandum of Agreement between the Torrington Board of Education and AFSCME Council 4 Local - Cafeteria Employees
