Job Title: Assistant Controller

Assistant Controller Overview:

We are seeking a hands-on and experienced Assistant Controller to join a dynamic and fast-paced transportation company. This individual will be responsible for overseeing day-to-day accounting operations, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting, and maintaining compliance with internal controls and regulatory requirements.

Assistant Controller Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage a team of approximately five accounting professionals, including an Accounting Manager, general accounting staff, Accounts Payable Clerks, and an Accounts Receivable Clerk.
  • Provide coaching, performance evaluations, and professional development for direct reports to maintain a high-performing and engaged team.
  • Oversee the accuracy and efficiency of core accounting functions, including:
    • Accounts Payable: Ensure timely and accurate payment of invoices and maintain workflows in the EBE accounts payable application.
    • Accounts Receivable: Ensure receipts are recorded promptly and accurately; assist in collections and coordinate with the billing team as needed.
    • General Accounting: Ensure all monthly and quarterly closing deadlines are met.
  • Enforce compliance with accounting procedures and Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) controls to ensure the integrity of financial data and reports.
  • Assist with internal and external audit processes, providing required documentation and data.
  • Collaborate with external tax accountants for federal, state, and local tax filings, including property tax reporting.

Assistant Controller Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred but not required).
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or management capacity.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP, SOX compliance, and internal controls.
  • Previous experience in the transportation or logistics industry highly preferred.
  • Proficiency in accounting systems and Microsoft Excel; experience with EBE software is a plus.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
