Advertised Job Summary Orthopaedic ResearchThe Department of Orthopaedics at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Columbia (USC SOMC) is seeking applications for faculty with discipline-specific expertise in translational science, research, bone health, and an interest in artificial intelligence to enhance our research enterprise to develop and execute competitive grant applications for federal funding. The position is an open rank-Assistant/Associate/Professor level within the tenure track, depending on experience and qualifications.
The Orthopaedic Department is seeking to position itself as a national and international leader in bone health from the understanding of bone development, its interaction with loading, the response to physiologic and super-physiological loading to remodeling, repair and healing. We believe that increased understanding in these areas can improve the lives of patients locally regionally, and national. To that end, we seek to compete for large federal grants to study these processes, understand them better, and develop clinically relevant and broadly applicable strategies for prevention and treatment. We are seeking candidates with a track record of research in this domain and the desire to join a team that is laser focused on delivering results in this subject matter.
Our department is an integrated orthopaedic department that has a strong focus on clinical care of the patients in our region. We seek to continually improve the care that we are delivering by constantly seeking to understand the effects of our treatment with a focus on patient reported outcomes. We are seeking a research scientist to join the team and support the mission of continually improving patient s care through thoughtfully design and detail oriented high quality research studies.
Teaching and research facilities at SOMC include a state-of-the-art anatomy teaching laboratory and cutting-edge lecture facilities, simulation center, multidisciplinary laboratory, and team-based learning room. In addition, we have long-standing excellent relationships with Ft. Jackson, the University of South Carolina departments of Public Health, Engineering, Computer Science, and Immunology to name a few. These facilities, our relationships with subject matter experts in numerous relevant domains and our connections with the local VA Hospital system and Ft. Jackson make our environment for scholarly activity in bone health one of kind.
Candidates are also expected to participate in scholarly activities and research programs that will provide opportunities to mentor our students, at a variety of learning levels, for future success. Engaging oral and written communication, as well as inclusive interpersonal skills, are essential for success in this role.
Job Duties:Research 90%
- Develop and conduct scholarly activities, including: development, coordination, execution of large federally funded grants, coordination of multidisciplinary teams, leading research question development, comparative effectiveness, translational, and/or other forms of clinically relevant research; submit findings for publication, for regional, national, and international presentations, and for extramural funding.
Teaching 5%
- Serve as content expert in research, research methodology, statistical analysis, and funding acquisition.
- Assist on an as requested basis with the development of educational materials, didactic lectures, and project mentorship of students, as needed by other teaching faculty.
- Attend learning activities to ensure integration and appropriate delivery of content; review curriculum feedback and progress to identify strengths and weaknesses and provide feedback to all appropriate individuals.
- Mentor individuals with a strong research interest in orthopaedics at a variety of educational levels.
Service 5%
Professional- Serve as a representative of USC SOMC through selection for service to local, state, and national specialty organizations within the area of expertise of the faculty member, or through the research areas of medical education, comparative effectiveness, and/or translational research.
Institution- Provide educational support for at-risk or underachieving students, as well as service on medical school committees as assigned.

Required Education and Experience o Ph. D or equivalent terminal degree in basic science, epidemiology, bone health, public health, or a related discipline.
o Record of successfully securing national funding (NIH, NSF, DoD) as a principal investigator or co-principal investigator.
o Experience in basic science research, bone health, generation of research questions, grant writing, and grant submission to multiple funding agencies.
o Experience with the design, delivery, and evaluation of grants and grant programs.
o Experience in a learner-centered environment with innovative teaching methods including Team-Based Learning, problem-based learning, and/or case-based learning.
o Candidates must demonstrate the ability to translate basic science topics to clinically relevant application.
o Proven record of dissemination in scholarship related to foundational sciences/translational research (e.g., implementation science, population health and patient-centered outcomes research) to local, regional, national, and international audiences.
Preferred Qualifications Preferred Qualifications:1. Recognized experience and expertise with the design, delivery, and execution of large scale federally funded research grants2. Competence in the scientific method, statistical analysis, leading, supporting, and developing teams, presenting research appropriately to peers, learners and superiors.3. Caring about research; specifically, about developing relevant and clinically impactful questions, utilizing rigorous, proven research methodology, and a hunger for discovering the ground truth through scholarly inquiry.
4. Proven record of dissemination in scholarship related to foundational sciences/translational research (e.g., implementation science, population health and patient-centered outcomes research), curriculum and medical education research, and/or collaborative research within a patient care clinical delivery system.
5. Additional consideration will be given to candidates with backgrounds in physiology, exercise science, epidemiology, public health, and/or bone health relevant disciplines.
