Reports to: Lab Manager

The Asphalt Laboratory Technician conducts tests on asphalt binders to ensure they meet quality and regulatory standards. This includes tests for performance grading, viscosity, penetration, and aging. The technician also manages laboratory operations, ensuring equipment calibration, accurate record-keeping, and compliance with safety and environmental guidelines. Additionally, they analyze test results, prepare reports, and support quality control and research projects related to asphalt performance.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Asphalt Binder Testing:

Conduct routine and specialized tests on asphalt cement, including:

Performance Grading (PG) Tests (DSR, BBR, RTFO, PAV)

Penetration and Softening Point Tests

Viscosity Testing

Ductility and Elastic Recovery Tests

Flash and Fire Point Tests

Solubility, Specific Gravity, and Aging Tests

2. Laboratory Operations & Quality Control:

Prepare, handle, and test asphalt binder samples according to ASTM, AASHTO, and local specifications.

Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment to ensure accuracy and reliability.

Follow proper safety procedures when handling asphalt binders, solvents, and heated materials.

Maintain detailed and accurate records of test results and observations.

Assist in quality control and research projects related to asphalt cement properties and performance.

3. Data Collection & Reporting:

Document and analyze test results, identifying trends and inconsistencies.

Prepare reports and communicate findings to engineers, supervisors, or clients.

Ensure all testing data complies with laboratory and regulatory requirements.

4. Compliance & Safety:

Follow laboratory protocols, safety regulations, and environmental guidelines.

Ensure proper disposal of chemicals and waste materials following environmental policies.

Participate in laboratory audits, inspections, and continuous improvement initiatives.


Qualifications and Experience:

Diploma or certification in Civil Engineering Technology, Materials Science, or a related field (preferred).

Experience in asphalt binder testing is preferred but not required (training may be provided).

Familiarity with ASTM, AASHTO, and MTO standards is an asset.

Hands-on experience with laboratory equipment for asphalt testing.

Ability to analyze and interpret laboratory results accurately.

Proficiency in data recording, analysis, and report writing.

Strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.

Ability to work independently and in a team environment.

Good organizational and time management skills.
