DescriptionSUPERVISION EXERCISED: Supervises the Staff Photographer and mentors any interns or student workers that may be appropriate to the office. Supervision of freelance graphic designer(s) is also required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports to the Assistant Vice President of Marketing and Communications.
POSITION SUMMARY: A strong graphic design background is required for the Art Director responsible for the design and production of university marketing collateral and other materials that will represent the institution effectively to its various audiences through print, graphics, digital, video and social media. The Art Director role will be hands-on and oversee the visual identity for the University to reach a diverse global audience. Conceptualize, design and implement print, digital and editorial marketing projects both for internal and external audiences. Lead strategy discussions to continually advance the visual identity for the University, and the offices supported by Marketing and Communications.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: - Compile, edit, design, and produce the University's marketing collateral, including print/digital materials for the President's Office, recruiting and Undergraduate, Graduate and School of Professional Studies & Innovation (SPSI) admissions materials, Moravian Seminary and Lancaster Theological Seminary materials, Alumni Engagement and Advancement materials, including marketing collateral, direct mail, reports, invitations, and programs for major events.
- Act as a liaison to search vendors/agencies for undergraduate, graduate and SPSI enrollment departments to ensure the consistent and appropriate use of Moravian University creative assets and visual identity.
- Work closely with the Marketing Project Manager to oversee multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring timely delivery and adherence to brand standards.
- Act as the steward for the Moravian University visual identity standards. Oversee and reviews outside design vendors to assure visual identity standards are followed and all designs remain consistent with the University standards established.
- Oversee and guide a group of student interns and/or student workers and approve hours when required.
- Collaborate with the Director of Editorial Content to support visual presentation of content in various publications such as the Moravian University Magazine, for both print and digital platforms.
- Manage and produce high-quality visuals for digital content platforms Shorthand, Keynote and others as necessary.
- Support faculty and staff requests for event promotion materials, graphics, and other design needs.
- Oversee on- and off-campus photo shoots that include the Staff Photographer, and/or a freelance photographer; including art direction, scheduling and on-set management.
- Lead weekly photography meetings to identify upcoming photo needs for the development of marketing materials for departments across the university
- Manage the pre-production process for marketing collateral and act as the liaison with print vendors to prepare files for production.
- Produce fresh, innovative print/digital work that translates complex ideas into successful promotional materials, signage and campus events.
- Act as a liaison between Moravian Book Shop and the University to approve merchandise designs.
- Provide art direction as necessary for campaigns, video shoots and illustration assignments.
- Collaborate with and provide design oversight to creative partners, agencies, vendors, as needed, to ensure alignment with the university's project goals and brand standards.
- Identify and manage freelance talent on an as-needed basis.
- Maintain, update, communicate, and uphold established brand guidelines for the institution.
- Assist other departments in the design and production of publications.
- Engage photographers and supervise professional photography scheduling and budgets for publications, websites, and special events.
- Assist other departments in obtaining printed materials such as business cards, letterhead, name tags, etc.
- Perform other tasks as required.
QUALIFICATIONS: - A baccalaureate degree in an appropriate field; proficient in the use of the Adobe Creative Suite, five or more years of experience in publications work preferred; proven writing, graphic design and publication layout experience, including appropriate computer skills; the capacity to judge and work productively with vendors and prepare files for print; the capacity to work with colleagues as a member of a team; willingness to give time over and above a "normal" work week; and belief in the mission and objectives of private higher education. Keep up with industry trends and new technology, e.g., artificial intelligence. Excellent understanding of typography, color theory, and layout design. Experience with video, illustration and photography, Adobe Firefly, Midjourney is a plus.
