GENERAL FUNCTIONS: Under the direction of the Aquatic Director and in accordance with Association policies, the Aquatic Specialist will ensure safety and high-quality experiences in YMCA pools and aquatic areas for all members, guests, and program participants. The Aquatic Specialist will assist with member and participants' needs, provide excellent customer service, and maintain a safe aquatic environment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: - Serve as a lifeguard and/or swim instructor for the aquatics department; creating an environment that is safe, welcoming, and nurturing for all members and guests.
- Prevent accidents by scanning assigned zone from bottom to top and covering zone in compliance with national lifeguard surveillance standards.
- Conduct swim classes, while in the pool, in accordance with Y of the USAs Swimming Lesson Program in an enthusiastic and exciting way while maximizing swimmer participation in every class period.
- Exercise mature judgment and strong decision making, especially as it relates to safety. Enforce health and safety rules and maintain emergency readiness.
- Develop rapport and maintain meaningful relationships with members, participants, and other staff.
- Able to work with other staff as part of a team.
- Respond to emergency situations in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Complete incident and accident reports as necessary.
- Use the See it, Own it philosophy when coming on duty, working, and going off duty in regard to cleanliness and safety concerns in the areas of the pool, locker rooms, and surrounding areas.
- Check pool, lesson, and rescue equipment and promptly report any problems.
- Set up and put away equipment.
- Perform swim tests as required by association policy.
- Maintain a positive and responsible attitude and demeanor.
- Participation and satisfactory completion of in-service training is mandatory.
- Uphold the core values of the YMCA when interacting with people within the YMCA facilities and within the community.
- Work scheduled shifts including weekend shifts. Arrangements for substitutes must be previously approved by the Aquatics Director.
Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Individuals considered for this job must take and pass an advanced swimming and rescue skills test. YMCA Lifeguard or Red Cross lifeguard certification is required. Individuals must also have at least 6 months past swim instructor experience and be willing to obtain certification as a YMCA Swim Lessons Instructor. Individuals in this job must be at least 18years of age and have the following abilities: exercise mature judgment and sound decision making; relate to people in a positive, but firm manner; observant; safety conscious; react calmly and quickly in an emergency; effectively communicate information on YMCA programs to members and participants; lift a minimum of 50 lbs and have full range of body movement. Lifeguard, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and AED certifications must be current and maintained.
