Responsibilities:
Journeyman 1 - HVAC Installation Responsibilities: The
Journeyman 1 - HVAC Installation is responsible for installing
commercial heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, ensuring compliance with
customer specifications, building codes, and industry best practices. This role requires the ability to work
outdoors in various weather conditions, operate
aerial lifts, and perform
pipe fitting, brazing, and soldering for
hydronic and refrigeration systems.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:- Install commercial HVAC equipment, including rooftop units (RTUs), split systems, boilers, chillers, ductwork, and ventilation systems.
- Perform pipe fitting for copper, PVC, and black iron used in HVAC, refrigeration, and hydronic systems.
- Braze and solder copper piping for refrigerant lines and hydronic heating applications.
- Fabricate and install PVC piping for condensate and drainage systems.
- Perform sheet metal fabrication, duct installation, and piping for chilled water, hot water, and refrigerant systems.
- Wire HVAC controls and thermostats as required for proper system operation.
- Secure and install pipe hangers, support brackets, and mounting structures.
- Operate aerial lifts and scissor lifts for elevated system installation and maintenance.
- Read and interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, and job specifications to ensure proper installation.
- Conduct start-up procedures and assist with system testing to ensure proper operation.
- Work with foremen, project managers, and other trades to meet project timelines and specifications.
- Maintain a safe and organized job site, following OSHA guidelines and company safety policies.
- Perform HVAC installations outdoors, adapting to varying weather conditions as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
On-the-Job Expectations - Assist journeymen or lead techs with:
- Ductwork, sheet metal, equipment installs
- Brazing, wiring, setting units
- Diagnosing basic system issues
- Run tools and materials, keep job site clean, and stay organized
- Learn to read plans, blueprints, and wiring diagrams
- Gain hands-on knowledge of different systems (RTUs, mini splits, chillers, etc.)
Qualifications:
Non-Union HVAC Apprentice Requirements Minimum Qualifications - 18 years old
- High school diploma or GED
- Valid driver's license
- Reliable transportation
- Basic understanding of hand tools and mechanical systems (not always required but definitely helps)
