Overview

The Surgical Services Health Unit Coordinator is responsible for unit scheduling functions and the indirect patient care functions, including patient admission/discharge functions. Obtaining appropriate patient signatures, patient accounting functions, and handling of the medical record. The Health Unit Coordinator is also responsible for all general office procedures, while functioning as the focal communication source. The Health Unit Coordinator demonstrates excellent customer service performance in their attitude and actions are at all times consistent with the standards contained in the Vision, Mission and Values of Covenant HealthCare and the commitment to Extraordinary Care for Every Generation.
Responsibilities

Assumes responsibilities for knowledge of and adherence to approved structure and process standards.

Demonstrates an awareness of and assumes self-responsibility for working within the scope of the Health Unit Coordinator role.

Ability to interact appropriately with patients/families in the following age groups: Infant (30 days

Excellent interpersonal communication skills.

Ability to handle varying levels of stressful situations.

Displays excellent communication, spelling and writing skills.

Performs basic math calculations.

Has working knowledge of computers/typing skills.

Knowledge of general office equipment/multiple filing systems.

Exemplifies proper, courteous phone etiquette.

Generates monthly statistics, reports, payroll, and log patient information if applicable.

Assists with data collection for patient outcome activities.

Acts as a resource for team members.

Acts as a focus of communication at the nursing station regarding all patient care activities, patient location, and are able to provide information and direction regarding the same.

Generates/completes patient record according to unit needs.

Transcribes physician orders as per unit policy completing all order entry procedures, forms, requisitions, and communications necessary to implement orders when applicable.

Assists with patient care as directed by a licensed caregiver.

Maintain confidentiality in relation to patients/families and the organization.

Attends unit staff meetings and in-service education programs.

Responsible for scheduling activities as defined by unit needs.

Cross train with other surgical Services areas to cover for breaks/lunch, days off and vacation time.

Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

High school graduate or equivalent.

BLS Heart Saver required based on manager discretion.

Certified Health Unit Coordinator (CHUC) preferred.

Previous experience in a healthcare environment, preferable in a surgical setting.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

Medical Terminology - preferred.

Basic literacy skills, basic computer skills.

Excellent organization skills.

Autonomous worker with excellent attendance.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Ability to maintain punctual attendance consistent with ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards.

Frequent lifting up to 10 lbs.

Frequent sitting, talking, and hearing

Occasional lifting up to 100 lbs.

Occasional standing, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, squatting, crawling, reaching, handling, and feeling.
