Radiation Protection Supervisor

Position Overview

Under limited management oversight, performs Radiation Protection supervisory oversight of radiological work in the field. Duties will include supervision of Radiation Protection Leads, Radiological Control Technicians (junior and senior assigned to perform job functions as assigned by Radiation Protection Section Managers and ES&H management. Typical job responsibilities are to supervise all radiological work planning, participate in Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) development and review, review and provide field validation and verification of all Radiation Protection Program core function procedures and assist and support management in ensuring the monitoring, controls and processes for reducing and controlling radioactive materials and radiation generating material and equipment are in compliance with all applicable procedures, policies, contractual/operational requirements, safety guidelines and managerial direction and DOE Orders. The specific work assignment may include duties or activities that assist and Radiation Protection and Project management in one or more of the following functional areas in addition to other duties as assigned by management:

Plans, schedules and organizes the work to ensure utilization of employees and compliance with all contract requirements, quality standards and budgetary guidelines

Directly supports Radiation Protection Section Managers in assigned duties including, but not limited to oversight of Radiation Protection Leads, Radiological Control Technicians and Radiological Workers.

Responsible for the daily review of radiation protection program quality records and transmittal agreements with RMDC

Ensures staffing levels of supervised personnel are maintained in a manner which allows the effective execution of the assigned scope of work at all times

Instructs employees on work methods and performance expectations

Provides leadership and motivation to subordinate personnel

Interfaces with groups inside and outside the organization, senior management, and auditors

Responsible for day to day operations of the group

Responsible for providing direction, training and evaluation of subordinate personnel

Assists with the development or review/update of various plans, policies or procedures as needed

Assists with maintaining positive employee relations

Responsible for group supervision and administration

May provide presentations to project senior management

Must be capable of understanding and performing methods and processes

Participates in planning experiments related to measurements of radioactive materials

Makes recommendations for corrective measures to reduce contamination levels when excessive contamination levels are detected

Responds to radioactive spills and contaminated personnel and gives direction as necessary

Generates reports for management

Proficient in a wide variety of Radiological Control support tasks

Leads training of less experienced technicians

Performs a variety of tasks complex to significantly difficult in nature

Other job related duties as assigned

May be assigned as Dosimetry Supervisor:

Under limited supervision, performs all coordination functions of the FBP Radiation Protection Dosimetry group as assigned by the Radiation Protection Manager. Typical job responsibilities include assisting and supporting management in all aspects of supplying dosimetry services for FBP, contracted support groups, ETS contractor, FSS contractor, DOE and others as approved under contract. The specific work assignment will include oversight of Dosimetry group staff, performance of issuing, exchanging, shipping and review of external dosimetry reports. Oversight of internal dosimetry program including the scheduling and processing of worker samples in addition to other duties as assigned. Responsible for applying the 5 core functions of Integrated Safety Management to all work planning and execution functions. Will lead, manage and supervise FBP/contractor personnel in their respective roles and responsibilities in support of the FBP Internal/External Dosimetry Program including:

Ensure that all dosimetry functions are administered in full compliance with DOE regulations, the RPP and all applicable FBP procedures

Assist and ensure all dosimetry staff are trained and qualified to perform duties

Assist in the development of dosimetry and other Radiation Protection procedures, policies, guides and related training material

Assist in development of performance measures, perform personnel performance appraisals and personnel development plans as required

Coordinate the procurement of all dosimetry equipment including maintenance of external contracts for TLD, PNAD and bioassay services

Maintain sufficient quantities of equipment to support dosimetry program compliance. Coordinate development, maintenance, retention and safe keeping of all dosimetry records

Responsible for responding to requests from external facilities including the support of all EEOICPA, FOIA and Privacy Act requests. This will include compliant use and storage of all dosimetry records for the history of the facility

Interface with Dosimetry vendors/suppliers for all TLD/PNAD supply/return issues

Ensure that all dosimetry processing is complete for each calendar year in support of the REMS/REIRS report to the DOE and also the annual report to employees

Ensure PNAD/TLD exchanges are completed quarterly and semi-annually as required for all employees/shifts on site for FBP/WEMS and BWCS

Ensure all necessary surveys are complete in support of off-site shipment of dosimetry equipment

Collect and report all TLD/bioassay results to management as required

Ensure employees receiving non-occupational medical treatments are processed properly. This includes close coordination with the facility medical staff

Ensure completion of all dose investigations including lost TLDs, X-Ray TLDs, damaged TLDs, etc

Schedule and exchange all area monitors, background monitors, and environmental TLDs on site

Coordinate RWP sign in sheets in support of site bioassay scheduling

Coordinate the proper packing, shipping and tracking of bioassay samples

May be assigned as Technical Training Supervisor:

Performs duties as the manager of technical training within the Radiation Protection organization reporting to the RPM; responsible for the development and oversight of Radiation Safety Training and its implementation through the DOE approved Radiation Protection Program (RPP) under 10 CFR 835. Duties include but are not limited to oversight of the Radiation Protection training staff for all required RP training for the following: managers, engineers, supervisors and technicians supporting assigned functions and elements of the Radiation Protection Program: responsibilities are to develop training, oversee and assess the implementation of site Radiation Safety Training, General Employee Radiation Training, Radiation Worker I AND Radiation Worker II delivered through DOE FSS contractor for overall effectiveness; measure, analyze and report effectiveness of RP training programs and personnel qualifications; Interface with DOE as site POC for DOE core training materials and exam bank custodian; coordinate supplemental qualification requirements and processes assigned to other organizations for RP Personnel. The specific work assignment may include duties or activities that assist and support management in one or more of the following functional areas, in addition to other duties as assigned:

Plans, schedules and integrates radiation protection program training elements to ensure utilization of employees and compliance with all contract requirements, quality standards and budgetary guidelines

Participates in various site teams, committees designed to implement ISMS and integrated work methods designed to enhance performance

Provides leadership and motivation to subordinate personnel

Maintains close working relationship with Radiation Protection Management and Project management while ensuring radiological control services are being properly executed compliantly and needs of the Project are met

Interfaces with groups inside and outside the ES&H organization, senior management, auditors and client representatives

Assists in the development of budgets, various plans, policies or procedures as needed

Responsible for personnel performance actions and performance appraisals

Responsible for supporting activities associated with the development and implementation of policies, procedures and systems supporting the Radiation Protection Program training elements

Develops or directs development of training programs for site personnel involved in radiological control work and assists in establishing operation standards

Must be capable of understanding and performing methods and processes related to health physics

Responsible for short term and long term planning of activities of the Radiation Protection Program

Generates reports

Proficient in a wide variety of Radiation Protection support tasks
