BASIC FUNCTION:

The AI/ML Technical Lead Manager will serve as the key technical advisor and provide subject matter expertise in AI/ML technologies to the AIM-AHEAD Consortium; assisting AIM-AHEAD's signature programs, Cores, Hubs, and stakeholders. This includes assisting with AI/ML training, as well as, managing a team of SMEs supporting the DSTC technical help desk which provides concierge-level technical support to AIM-AHEAD stakeholders. The DSTC technical help desk functions as a centralized support system within the AIM-AHEAD consortium and is staffed by AIM-AHEAD subject-matter expert (SME) which include faculty and students from Howard University and across the AIM-AHEAD consortium who will promptly respond to questions or provide on demand Concierge Support Services via zoom. Additionally, the AI/ML Technical Lead Manager will take on a leadership role in writing proposals for AI/ML projects and assist the DSTC in pursuing new AI/ML research opportunities focused on advancing health equity.

SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY:

The AI/ML Technical Lead and Concierge Services Manager will supervise the DSTC Help Desk, acting as the Subject Matter Expert. This includes attending relevant program meetings, representing the DSTC, and reporting on training needs within the program during DSTC standing meetings.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

Internal Contacts: Lead MPI, Faculty, staff, and students at Howard University.

External Contacts: DSTC MPIs and support staff, AIM-AHEAD Coordinating Center MPIs and AIM-AHEAD stakeholders.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Manage and operate the DSTC Help Desk within AIM-AHEAD Connect, ensuring prompt and effective responses to AI/ML inquiries.
  • Provide concierge support services via weekly standing office hours through Zoom, as well as ad-hoc consultations scheduled through Calendly.
  • Oversee and manage efforts of an undergraduate/graduate student(s) who will provide first-level responses to help desk tickets.
  • Establish and maintain processes and documentation, ensuring that all DSTC support personnel are trained to provide consistent support across all DSTC institutions.
  • Develop and manage knowledge bases, FAQs, and other resources to facilitate end-user self-service and streamline help desk responses.
  • Act as the primary escalation point for complex issues. In the event of complex cases, collaborate with DSTC MPI staff and other SMEs from the AIM-AHEAD community to resolve issues effectively.
  • Coordinate with and manage other Subject Matter Experts to ensure technical support coverage and office hours availability across a variety of days and times.
  • Assist in the development of proposals for AI/ML projects that advance health equity and support the strategic goals of the DSTC and AIM-AHEAD.
CORE COMPETENCIES:
  • Expertise in AI/ML technologies, including Python/R and supporting libraries, Jupyter notebooks, Google Colab, machine learning algorithms, data science, health equity, EHR, and SDOH.
  • Proven leadership and team-building skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical issues into clear, understandable language.
  • Proficiency with help desk software and customer relationship management (CRM) tools.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills, with a customer-focused mindset.
  • Ability to analyze data and generate actionable insights that inform decision-making.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

A Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related field. At least 5 years of experience in AI/ML software development and research.Expertise across various topics, including but not limited to:
  • AI/ML tools and techniques (Python, R, Jupyter Notebooks, Google Colab)
  • Data science principles (statistics, data visualization, data wrangling, data harmonization, database management, model building)
  • Machine learning algorithms and applications
  • Health equity and its integration into AI/ML research
  • EHR, SDOH, and other health data systems
  • Developing research hypotheses, managing IRB processes, and working with DUAs

A central resource is the technical help desk that assists with AI/ML, health disparity inquiries, or research request
