Pima Animal Care Center is looking to add an Animal Care Assistant II to our Pet Resource Team. This position provides in person customer support to help keep pets out of the shelter. You will assist in providing multiple resources to pet families in need, and enroll pets into our Safety Net Foster Program. This position will work with owners surrendering their animals into the shelter and support owners who may be experience a crisis.

Essential Functions:

  • Communication & Customer Service - Answers calls, routes messages, and resolves routine problems via phone, email, or in person.
  • Administrative Support - Manages office tasks, including word processing, document editing, data entry, and filing system maintenance.
  • Animal Care & Handling - Handles dogs and cats of varying temperaments, assists with vaccinations, microchipping, and general care like feeding and cleaning.
  • Program & Policy Assistance - Specializes in specific program functions, provides policy explanations, and assists in writing SOPs.
  • Leadership & Training - Acts as a lead when the supervisor is absent, maintains training procedures and documents, and trains other staff.
  • Financial & Licensing Tasks - Issues permits, licenses, bonds, reviews cash drawers, prepares deposits, and processes accounting documents.
  • Data & Reporting Management - Maintains databases, retrieves data, compiles reports, and ensures accuracy of records.
  • Event & Meeting Coordination - Schedules meetings, conferences, and other appointments.
  • Supervision & Evaluation - May train, supervise, and evaluate staff, including hiring and termination recommendations.
  • Office Equipment & Operations - Operates various office equipment, including computers, photocopiers, and calculators.
Minimum Qualifications:

Four (4) years of experience performing secretarial or administrative tasks that demonstrate the required knowledge and skills INCLUDING two (2) years of experience providing overall support and coordinator for the department, specialized program, or small business.

OR:

Two (2) years of experience as an Animal Care Assistant I or Office Support, or a similar clerical classification within Pima County.

Preferred Qualifications: (Be specific in describing your experience in your application. Ensure the descriptions provided illustrate your competencies, specifically addressing the required and preferred qualifications.):
  • Customer service experience.
  • Experience working, volunteering, or interning in an animal shelter, boarding facility, or animal care setting.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish).
  • Experience working in behavioral health, social work, and/or community outreach positions.

Selection Procedure:
Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum/desired qualifications. All applications will be assessed based on an evaluation of the listed education and experience. Candidates meeting the minimum/desired qualifications may be further evaluated/scored against any advertised Preferred Qualifications. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidates from a referral list provided by Human Resources. Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process.

Supplemental Information:

Licenses and Certificates: Some positions require a valid Arizona Class D driver license at the time of application or appointment. Failure to obtain / maintain the required licensure shall be grounds for termination.

Special Notice: Completion of a rabies vaccination cycle is required within two (2) months of hire. Medical inability to be immunized or previous immunization must be verified by the County Physician prior to employment. Recommended boosters are required for the duration of employment, unless medically excused or physiologically unable to develop immunity. Some positions may require satisfactory completion of a personal background investigation by the court or law enforcement agencies, due to the need for access to County Attorney and Court facilities, records, and communication systems. The County requires pre-employment background checks. Successful candidates will receive a post-offer, pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history. A prior criminal conviction will not automatically disqualify a candidate from employment with the County. This position will require a post-job offer physical and drug screen.

Physical/Sensory Requirements: This position requires the ability to constantly operate a computer and other office equipment; constantly observe details at close range; and occasionally participate in external events. Additional physical and sensory abilities will be determined by position.

Working Conditions: Working conditions for this position includes potential exposure to zoonic illnesses; high exposure to animal dander of multiple species; exposure to cleaning chemicals such as bleach and rescue cleaning products; and a loud office environment. Additional working conditions will be determined by position.
