PURPOSE: The Danbury Public Schools provides educational services to more than 12,000 students across a rich, diverse City. We employ nearly 2000 staff members, divided among certified teachers and noncertified staff, with the majority of staff working under Collective Bargaining Agreements. This Administrative Assistant Human Resources/Benefits will work to support small, collaborative teams focused on Human Resources and Employee Health and Welfare Benefits respectively. This is an in-person position for someone with excellent collaborative working skills and superior attention to detail, with a willingness to learn more about the intersection of human resources and benefits.
JOB SUMMARY The Benefits and Wellness Assistant performs administrative work supporting the Benefits Coordinator for health and wellness function of Employee Benefits. Key areas of support involve the administration of all benefits and retirement programs, including medical, dental, vision, long term disability, life and voluntary life insurance and workers compensation. The individual in this role must have great collaborative skills to work with other members of the Human Resources department.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - Assist in the Administration of the various employee benefits programs, such as group health, flexible spending accounts, dental and vision, life insurance, and wellness benefits, workers compensation.
- Assist with the development and execution of wellness initiatives.
- Assists with the open enrollment process.
- Work with various vendors to resolve employee benefit issues.
- Generate/compile various data requests and reports.
- Assist in maintaining and updating files, both paper and electronic.
- May provide support to collective bargaining process around benefit programs.
- Other related duties as assigned by the Chief Talent Officer and/or the Coordinator of Benefits.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS - High school graduate or equivalent.
- Minimum of two/three years of relevant work experience.
- Demonstrated administrative and organizational skills.
- Knowledge of workers compensation.
- Experience with various computer software applications such as Microsoft Office, Excel, and/or equivalent.
- Respect for confidentiality of sensitive employee information.
- Experience with data entry in a payroll or human resources database preferred. Knowledge of Tyler/Infinite Visions a plus.
- Outstanding organizational skills and ability to multi-task are required.
- Must have strong technology skills.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Flexibility to adjust work schedule as needed.
- Strong data entry experience.
- Typing and spelling competency with grammar and proofreading skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS - Associate degree in Human Resources or related field.
- Experience in Workers Compensation.
- Human Resources/Benefits experience.
- Knowledgeable in Employee Benefits and applicable laws.
- Strong customer service skills.
- Ability to handle confidential materials with discretion.
- Demonstrated proficiency in Excel (VLOOKUP, Pivot table), MS Word, and PowerPoint.
- Experience using Human Resources/Benefits information systems (Tyler School ERP/Infinite Visions preferred).
- Experience using various reporting software (Frontline, Absence Management Preferred).
- Demonstrates willingness to learn and develop intermediate skills in employee-related software programs.
REPORTS TO: Works at the direction of the Coordinator of Benefits, with reporting to the Chief Talent Officer
Working Conditions: This is a Grade 4 Administrative Assistant Full Year 52 week position.
Wage rate of $27.28/hour or $49,649 per year under current UPSEU Union Agreement which will be re-negotiated for the 2025-26 school year. All other benefits as provided in the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
