No Job Duties Overview: Academic Coaches serve in a one-on-one academic mentorship role for students who want to improve their organizational abilities, time management, study skills, and more. As a more experienced learner, you will connect with students who want to improve their learning abilities. Academic Coaching provides intentional, individual support aimed at fostering academic success for undergraduate students. They work individually with students, assessing their strengths and needs, and devising a personalized plan of action. The Academic Coach position is for undergraduate students and intended to be held for a full academic year. The goal of the Academic Coaching program is to enrich, enhance, and facilitate the student learning experience at Lamar University. Coaches will provide services primarily via individual appointments with students with the opportunity to provide workshops on various academic success topics for the campus at large. General Description: Throughout the semester, Academic Coaches meet individually with students to identify academic goals, develop learning skills, address challenges, and assess progress. The coaching experience enables students to engage in learning and goal-setting autonomously throughout their college career. Coaches must be able to work 10 hours per week. Additional hours may be available depending on demand for program services. Essential Functions: Provide peer support, model effective learning, and serve as an accountability partner to other undergraduate students who are participating in the Academic Coaching program. Assist students with identifying and overcoming barriers to their academic success in one-on-one sessions. Deliver presentations on various academic skills and strategies to student organizations and across campus. Maintain confidentiality and uphold FERPA requirements. Provide guidance, support, and discuss skills such as college-level time management, study strategies, successfully navigating the university environment, stress management, and more to various population of students. Achieve and advance certification through the College Reading and Language Association (CRLA) as a Peer Educator. Pay raises are commensurate with additional CRLA certifications. (All training is paid, and we work with your class schedule to determine your work hours). Other duties as assigned by the Academic Coaching Specialist. Communication Meet regularly with the program specialists to discuss program objectives and needs. Communicate with student-employee team members. Promote student awareness of all programs/services offered. Participate in outreach and tabling events. Pay Rate:$12 per hour, maximum 10 hours per week Minimum Qualifications Minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA in good standing. Currently enrolled or planning to enroll in the upcoming semester. Must be available for pre-semester training and regular staff meetings. Excellent written, verbal, and listening communication skills. Position requires a 1 academic year commitment - Fall Semester and Spring Semester. Strong study skills and successful student habits and behaviors. Capacity and desire to work with students of various backgrounds. Highly dependable, punctual, and adaptable. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Strong academic skills and habits that you can model for students. Ability to clearly explain information in multiple ways. Ability to quickly establish rapport with others. Belief that anyone can grow and improve regardless of where they start. Physical Requirements Visual acuity to read written or printed text on screens or paper. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and/or through writing. Manual dexterity for writing, typing, and reaching. Ability to move safely to and from various buildings across campus. Ability to lift and move objects no heavier than 10 pounds. Certifications Required Work Hours Coaches must be able to work 10 hours per week. Additional hours may be available depending on demand for program services. Job Conditions Work is indoors and sedentary. Schedule is subject to change according to student worker availability and department need.
