Student Support Monitor Job Description

Job Summary:

Under direct supervision of the Student Support Assistant Principal, and working alongside the Student Success Advocate, the Student Support Monitor will help children and young adults, especially those who have faced substantial life obstacles that previously have prevented academic success. The Student Support Monitor will support the school's mission and collaborate with school counselors, school social workers, and administration to ensure that the character development program is instituted and will assist with ensuring equity and diversity. Student Support Monitors are responsible for the physical and emotional safety of students in all grades, with a specific focus on grades 6-12. Student Support Monitors will assist in daily entrance procedures, hallway transitions, lunchroom monitoring, daily attendance and other responsibilities as assigned.

The Student Support Monitor will be expected to adhere to Amplus Academy's professional standards. Amplus Academy is a classical education charter school located in the southwest area of Las Vegas; Amplus Academy has two campuses serving Kindergarten-12th grade students.

Terms of Employment: 10-month per Contract of Employment

Salary: The compensation for this position is in alignment with the Amplus Governing Board approved Salary Schedule; Salary Schedule based on years' experience and degree held. Compensation for all positions are determined by the Governing Board and Administration of Amplus Academy. Consideration is given for experience and specialized skills in determining salary.

Salary Range: $15- $21 per hour without substitute teaching license; $20- $27 per hour with substitute teaching license

Duties/Responsibilities:
•  The primary duty is remaining mobile and visible by patrolling school corridors, locker rooms, restrooms, assembly and athletic facilities, gymnasiums, playground, car lanes and other campus locations in order to observe student behavior and prevent violations of school rules or unsafe activities, which may include physical interventions (i.e., jogging or running after a student to prevent them from doing harm to him/herself or others).
•  Examines doors, windows, and gates to ensure security
•  Maintains alertness for problems likely to disrupt the educational process or to be injurious to persons or property; corrects or reports school rule violations and conditions hazardous to the health and safety of pupils, the public, and the staff.
•  Assist with carpool supervision during drop off and pick up
•  Assists with supervision of playground activities (recess) and lunchroom monitoring
•  Observes and monitors student behavior outside the classroom.
•  Intervenes appropriately in situations likely to result in disruption or injury and imposes appropriate consequences for student conduct in alignment with school policy.
•  Maintains positive relationships and acts as a liaison with school administration, staff, students, parents/guardians, and community members.
•  Notifies administrators of bullying incidents, illegal activities, and/or threats of harm to students on or near campus, and other issues that require immediate attention.
•  Assists in carrying out emergency response plans (i.e., fire drills, bomb threats, lock downs, etc.).
•  Refers students to administration in cases of flagrant or repeated violations of school policies and/or regulations and assists teachers when requested in dealing with disruptive students.
•  Operates a two (2)-way radio to communicate with school office and other school security personnel.
•  Diffuses threatening situations/confrontations in a positive and constructive manner.
•  Administers Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation/Automated External Defibrillator (CPR/AED), when necessary.
•  Observes, intervenes, and gathers information regarding inappropriate activities.
•  Prepares Student Incident Reports, referrals, and witness statements, as necessary.
•  Assists administration with clubs, activities, student government athletics and after school programs such as "Archer Academy", after school tutoring, detention, study hall, school dances, and community events
•  Conforms to safety standards, as prescribed.

Required Skills/Abilities:
•  Knowledge of safety rules and procedures to be observed by students and standards of courtesy and behavior expected of students.
•  Knowledge of interpersonal skills using tact, patience, flexibility, and customer service orientation.
•  Knowledge of and skill in performing building security and lockdown procedures
•  Knowledge of adolescent development, behavior, and social influences.
•  Knowledge of the operation of a two (2)-way radio and use established public security codes.
•  Knowledge of school and community resources to assist students and families.
•  Knowledge of methods of investigation and property protection.
•  Knowledge of and ability to use conflict resolution strategies/skills.
•  Ability to perform and use CPR/AED and Universal Precautions, when necessary.
•  Ability to patrol and monitor school campus and other areas to maintain order and security, as assigned.
•  Ability to learn and apply relevant Nevada Revised Statutes (NRS) and school rules, policies, regulations, and school procedures.
•  Ability to perform duties with patience and tact and to exercise good judgment to maintain discipline and order within established guidelines.
•  Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, in a professional manner.
•  Ability to follow established investigatory protocols and to prepare clear and concise incident reports and witness statements, as necessary.
•  Ability to successfully conduct security patrols without direct supervision.
•  Ability to interact effectively with persons of divergent cultural and educational backgrounds.
•  Ability to determine when to intervene in physical confrontations, when to defuse/de-escalate confrontations, and when to refer situations to an administrator
•  Ability to communicate and act effectively in a crisis.
•  Ability to handle multiple tasks under stressful situations.
•  Ability to work flexible hours and shifts.
•  Ability to build, establish, and maintain cooperative, effective, and positive working relationships with students, co-workers, parents/guardians, and the public/community.
•  Ability to recognize and report hazards and apply safe work methods.
•  Possess physical and mental stamina commensurate with the responsibilities of the position.
•  Ability to interpret and apply oral and written instructions.
•  Ability to perform several tasks and determine priorities.

•  Time management skills to prioritize and complete a side variety of tasks throughout the day.
•  Possess physical and mental stamina commensurate with the responsibilities of the position. Education and Experience:
•  High school graduation or other equivalent, (i.e., GED, college, technical, or trade school transcript, foreign equivalency, etc.) required
•  Associate's Degree or at least 60 college credits preferred
•  State of Nevada Substitute License preferred
•  One (1) year experience working with children and youth preferred

•  This type of work requires occasional or frequent standing, walking, sitting, bending, or reaching for extended periods of time.
•  This type of work requires occasional or frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling during crisis scenarios such as hard lockdowns, earthquake drills, etc.
