Job Title: Workmen - Grounds Supervisor: Assistant Manager - Grounds and Central Maintenance Terms of Employment: 246 days Job Summary: The Workmen - Grounds maintains district and school grounds, and other landscaped areas to provide a safe and aesthetically appealing experience for students and staff. This position performs duties to include, soil cultivation, digging, pruning, bed preparation, cutting and mulching to ensure the attractive appearance of District facilities and grounds. This position also performs repair on small engines or other grounds equipment as needed. This position also requires the safe transportation and operation of heavy equipment. Adhere to HCS core values. Essential Duties Plants various landscaping materials such as sod, shrubbery, flowers, trees, and hedges for the purpose of keeping District grounds attractive and protected against erosion. Prepares grounds in order to provide attractive and safe areas for assemblies, athletic or recreational events, graduations, or other special events. Performs hard surface repair (concrete, asphalt). Cleaning, preparation and execution of parking lot line and traffic striping. Performs repairs on playground facilities, fencing, signs and miscellaneous structures. Operation of commercial grade pressure washers and components. Cleans landscaped areas and related areas such as storm drains, walkways, and parking lots for the purpose of preventing flooding and removing trash or other hazards. Applies pesticides, fungicides, fertilizers, and other chemicals to stimulate plant growth, prevent disease, and control weeds or insect infestations. Assist with minor repairs to irrigation systems. Assist with the maintenance of Athletic competition fields. Removes snow, branches, rocks, and litter from sidewalks, playgrounds, and parking areas. Applies sand and salt during snow and icy conditions to maintain safe walking surfaces for students, staff, and the general public. Safely transport and operate heavy equipment such as dump truck, backhoe, excavator, skid steer loader, tractor, etc. Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns, taking appropriate action to effectively resolve existing concerns and to maintain a functioning educational environment. Maintains grounds and landscaping tools and equipment and makes appropriate small engine repairs; ensures that tools and equipment are available and in safe and efficient operating condition. Operates various equipment including backhoes, dump truck, excavator, disc harrow, lawn tractors, forklift, tiller, chainsaws, trimmers, leaf blower, sprayer and mowers. Requests materials, supplies and equipment as needed to ensure that adequate materials are available to complete job duties in an efficient and effective manner. Transports various items including tools, equipment, and supplies for the purpose of providing materials at the job site and between school sites, and as needed for various programs or events. Installs drainage tiles and grades surfaces for proper drainage. Prunes trees, cuts dead and undesirable trees, and trims hedges to promote growth and improve appearance. Coordinates work efforts with grounds crew or others in the department. Other Duties Perform such other tasks and assume such other responsibilities as may from time to time be assigned. Job Specifications Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of Support Personnel. Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required) Completion of high school diploma required. Possession of a South Carolina Class A CDL driver's license preferred. Knowledge and experience in heavy equipment operation preferred. Ability and knowledge to properly perform detailed preventive maintenance on all types of heavy equipment preferred. Demonstrated ability to follow instructions, both oral and written, for prescribed job responsibilities. Knowledge of how to properly perform manual tasks. Knowledge of safety practices relevant to the tasks performed and equipment employed. Ability to use small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems. Ability to use computers, iPad and smart phone for data entry. Ability to communicate with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems. Ability to use or repair small/light equipment, such as power tools. Ability to use or repair medium equipment and machinery, such as vehicles or commercial mowers, backhoe, dump truck, equipment trailer, etc. Ability to guide and train other employees. Ability to assume work load and follow-up on tasks with minimal directions. Skills in basic arithmetic; ability to calculate volume and measure materials precisely. Ability to estimate time and materials for job and keep records of stock. Knowledge of the methods for appropriately planting, transplanting, fertilizing, pruning, watering or otherwise maintaining various plants, shrubs, trees, lawns, etc. Knowledge of safe and effective handling and disposal of chemicals or other agents used in performing job duties. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Administration and/or Board may find appropriate and acceptable. Ability to wear and knowledge of proper PPE (eye protection, face shield, hearing protection, hand protection, protective clothing, safety shoes, etc.) required for each task. Physical Requirements The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and reach with hands and arms; walk; sit; stoop or kneel; crouch or crawl. The majority of work will consist of an outdoor environment. Must be able to work in a constant change of temperatures and weather conditions. Additional physical requirements include the following: physically capable of frequently lifting or moving up to 100 pounds; specific vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to focus; ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; manual dexterity for the purpose of using a telephone, data entry, using hand tools; read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; eye-hand coordination to avoid injury; physical endurance to lift tools, equipment, and supplies while standing, climbing, bending, or kneeling for long periods; hear and understand speech at normal levels and on the telephone; and Speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in person and on the telephone.
