Duties Makes and repairs wooden supply, storage, and shipping containers such as boxes, crates, etc., which typically require complete custom building involving complex construction plans and work procedures Secures freight such as heavy, unbalanced machinery, vehicles, and equipment; industrial plant equipment; artillery; odd-shaped containers; large explosive bombs, rockets, and missiles; nuclear materials (i.e., reactor materials); sensitive electronic equipment; large communication shelters; and similar cargo in a variety of containers and inside or upon conveyances such as ships, aircraft, vans, gondola cars, box cars, and barges Performs a wide variety of standard and specialized preservation and/or packing work. Operates electric, LPG, or diesel powered fork lifts capable of lifting loads weighing less than 10,000 pounds as high as 168 inches to facilitate loading and unloading duties Uses and maintains various types of hand and/or power tools, such as nail and staple guns; hand, radial, and circular saws; hammers, joiners, and squares; etc. Performs duties in a safe manner, utilizing safety practices and procedures, and complying with established safety rules and regulations Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship Required Males must be registered for Selective Service, see A security clearance may be required This posn is subject to provisions of the DoD Priority Placement Program Disclosure of Political Appointments The work requires the employee to possess the applicable license(s) and/or authorizations to operate assigned equipment May be required to train and/or guide lower graded employees May be required to be certified for working with and/or removing hazardous materials his is a drug testing designated position. Incumbent of this position is subject to the possibility of a random drug test Work continuously involves standing, stooping, reaching, or similar physical activity. Must sometimes work in cramped or awkward positions and may have to climb upon or crawl under vehicles or structures. Occasionally performs heavy, strenuous, tiring work for prolonged periods on hard surfaces, Continuously lifts, carries, and positions tools and materials weighing up to 18 kilograms ( approximately 45 pounds) Often moves or positions extremely heavy items using jacks, levers, floor hoists, cranes, fork lifts, or assistance from other workers Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance Qualifications In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-4606-08, Wood Worker (Blocker and Bracer) position. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of a Wood Worker (Blocker and Bracer) without more than normal supervision. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Knowledge of a wide range of requirements surrounding the packing, preserving, storing, blocking/bracing, and conveying of hazardous materials; and custom/special woods, wood substitutes, and plastic materials for selection in constructing custom containers and for use in a full range of blocking and bracing duties Knowledge of arithmetic to calculate lengths, widths, and weights Knowledge of safety regulations, practices, and procedures Skill in applying a complete range of woodworking techniques to include measuring and laying out new designs/changes for custom container construction; skill involving the full range of blocking and bracing cargo inside or upon conveyances, including the development of plans for fabrication of new devices for special demands; and skill to perform a wide variety of standard and specialized packing/preserving to include various protective/cushioning and bracing techniques Skill to use and maintain tools and equipment, such as hammers, hand saws, power saws, pneumatic nailers/staplers, heat sealing and vacuum equipment, woodworking machines, etc.; skill and dexterity to safely operate fork lifts without more than normal supervision Ability to read and follow specifications, instructions, sketches, illustrations, and blueprints PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work continuously involves standing, stooping, reaching, or similar physical activity. Must sometimes work in cramped or awkward positions and may have to climb upon or crawl under vehicles or structures. Occasionally performs heavy, strenuous, tiring work for prolonged periods on hard surfaces. WORKING CONDITIONS: Works in warehouse or enclosed area that my be drafty, cold, or overheated. Occasionally works outside and is subject to prevailing weather conditions. Frequently exposed to noise and possible cuts, abrasions, muscle strains and injuries from using hand and powered tools. Exposed to nose and lung irritation: from dust and sawdust, and possible injuries from falling objects, swinging crane loads etc. May be exposed to noxious fumes, skin irritants, and flammable chemicals. Safety equipment such as safety glasses, hard toe shoes, ear plugs, hard hats, or other protective equipment may be required to be worn on the job. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
