GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:

Under immediate supervision of the Operations Manager or his/her designee, this position performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the installation, general maintenance, repair and replacement of the City's water system; and to operate light and moderately heavy power-driven equipment.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Removes, installs, maintains, and repairs water mains, service laterals, meters, hydrants, valves and other water system facilities.
  • Participates in the excavation of concrete, pavement, dirt and backfills open trenches and completes surfaces "to-finish" as appropriate.
  • Sets up traffic control including signs and barricades, and directs traffic around work sites.
  • Operates large trucks and medium-sized construction equipment such as loaders, backhoes, trenching machines, compressors, and excavators.
  • Operates leak detection and pipe location equipment relative to excavation, tapping and repair of water lines.
  • Repairs and/or replaces water meters and related mechanisms, including disassembly, cleaning, inspection, replacement and testing of parts.
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance on tools, equipment, and vehicles used in the work and stocks vehicles with adequate supply of tools and equipment needed to perform the work.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE of, SKILL and ABILITY to:
  • Basic techniques and methods used in installation, maintenance, and repair of water systems; general use, purpose,
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, subordinate employees, public officials, and the public.
  • Knowledge of general operations of the department in order to take on necessary tasks when other staff are absent.
  • Perform semi-skilled general maintenance and construction tasks; perform heavy physical labor.
  • Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Safely and effectively perform duties and operate equipment in regular traffic areas; may work unusual and prolonged work schedules, may work multiple shifts during emergencies, seasonally caused circumstances, or special projects in varying climatic and temperature conditions.
  • Learn to operate a variety of power equipment, tools, and medium weight trucks requiring Class B licensing used in the installation, maintenance, and repair of water system components.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
  • High School Diploma or its equivalent.
  • Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and training abilities is qualifying.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Possession of or ability to obtain within the first six months in the position, a Class B driver's license with appropriate endorsements.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Good driving record, ability to drive a City vehicle and possession of a valid Driver's license.
