This is skilled work in the operation and inspection of a water treatment plant on a permanent or rotating shift. Position works under the supervision and direction of Superintendent / Water and/or Chief Operator / Water. Water Operator A: $24.5890 - $39.3424 Water Operator B: $21.4770 - $34.3631 Water Operator C: $20.0719 - 32.1151 Serves on a permanent or rotating shift, inspects water plant equipment and machinery to determine that all machinery is operating properly; collects samples in plant, distribution system and water source according to established protocol; performs routine laboratory and analyses to determine effectiveness of treatment process and records results. Adjusts control devices of processes to provide effective treatment; operates gates, valves and other mechanical equipment as directed. Inspects and adjusts treatment plant equipment, such as chlorinators, mixers, pumps, samplers, chemical feeders, and related equipment. Inspects recording charts and meters and on the basis of recorded information makes adjustments to controls in conformance with operating instructions. Performs and records laboratory analyses. Performs maintenance services on a variety of plant equipment and machinery and may assist mechanics in major repairs and installation work. Reports malfunctions of equipment to supervisor. Assists in establishing and maintaining Standard Operating Procedures. Communicates with public on tours and phone calls. Performs various grounds maintenance and housekeeping duties as necessary. Reads and records data registered on telemetering gauges involving flow, pressure and other operating parameters. Assists in collecting all compliance samples as required. Maintains records and prepares periodic summary reports of operations. (These essential job functions are not to be construed as a complete statement of all duties performed. General knowledge of the operating principles and practices applicable to water treatment equipment and machinery. General knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions required of the work. General knowledge of remote telemetry systems as they apply to plant operations. General knowledge of mechanical maintenance and lubrication requirements of the equipment operated. General knowledge of plumbing for light repairs. Skilled in the use of small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems. Skilled in using computers for data entry, word processing and accounting purposes. Ability to accurately follow routine operating and recording procedures and to understand and follow oral and written instruction. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing. Ability to instruct trainees in plant operations. Ability to work in a team environment and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, regulators or customers. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations. Ability to troubleshoot equipment or processes and make minor mechanical repairs or adjustments. Ability to maintain accurate and detailed operating records. Ability to utilize computer hardware and software effectively. Education and Experience: H High School Diploma from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma is required. One (1) year of work experience in the operation of water treatment plants. (A comparable amount of relevant training, education and/or experience may be substituted for the above qualifications.) Licenses and Certifications: Must possess a valid Florida Driver's License. Possession and maintenance of a State of Florida Water Operator "A", "B" or "C" certification for water treatment.
