s SC-PAY GRADE 8 WATER OPERATOR I DUTIES AND FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Employee in this class assists in the routine and non-routine inspections of water facilities to verify proper operation in accordance with established procedures. Incumbent works under general supervision. This position requires weekend and holiday work as well as participation in the twenty-four (24) hour on-call rotating schedule. EXAMPLES OF WORK: Participates in the work of operating and maintaining water production, distribution and treatment facilities; starts, stops, sets operating sequence and speed of water pumps, air compressors, blowers, chemical mixing and distribution equipment and additional related machinery; performs work at various County owned facilities; assists in record keeping including meters and gauge readings; assists with adjustments and repairs, performs routine lubrication work; assists with collecting samples, performing basic analyses; cleans and paints pumps and related equipment; performs related work as required. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Moderate knowledge of water operations, including water supply, treatment, storage and distribution: knowledge of State of Delaware regulations for operators of public water supply systems; establishes and maintains effective relationships with federal and state regulatory representatives; knowledge of the care and maintenance of machinery and equipment; ability to collect water samples and perform simple analyses; ability to handle hazardous and combustible materials safely; ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions; ability to obtain and maintain required licenses and/or certifications. QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum High School Diploma or GED and possession of a Base Level Water Supply Operator license; good verbal and written communication skills; working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel). Incumbent works under general supervision. This position requires weekend and holiday work as well as participation in the twenty-four (24) hour on-call rotating schedule. Also, responsible for verifying and adjusting controls in accordance with established procedures requiring significant training and judgment in order to maintain satisfactory facility function. Supervises support personnel when directed. Responsible for routine and standardized maintenance evaluations. This position requires weekend and holiday work as well as participation in the twenty-four (24) hour on-call rotating schedule.
