Water Conservation Intern Job Details Level Entry Job Location Vail Administration Building - Vail, CO Salary Range $22.81 - $31.94 Hourly Description Water Conservation is an environmentally & economically responsible practice that ensures existing water resources are used efficiently while protecting water rights and our environment. We are currently looking for a student or recent graduate to intern with our Water Conservation Program. The purpose of the Water Conservation Program is to develop & lead environmental stewardship and water conservation initiatives that empower customers to use water more efficiently. The water conservation intern will work on a variety of projects as assigned by the Water Conservation Manager to support the program's goals and efforts. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is equally comfortable crunching data as they are working in the field and having a conversation with our customers about water conservation. The ideal candidate for this role must be committed to environmental stewardship, have strong data analysis skills and be able to think outside the box while collaborating with a highly productive team of fun and friendly people. What you'll learn: + What a Water Efficiency Plan is and a basic understanding of how to implement a community wide water plan + How sustainability, water efficiency, wastewater, and ecosystem health interact + How conservation, customer service, and outreach work together to create successful conservation programs + The data behind water demand and conservation + Real-world data management and practical data applications What you'll do: + Geographic Information Systems: Use GIS and GPS tools in support of Water Conservation Program initiatives + Rebate Program: Customer engagement/outreach, tracking, and irrigation audits + Reporting: Report automation and water use and analyses + Customer Engagement: events, farmers market, presentation support, etc. + Data Management and processing: assist with data entry and data process improvements with multiple departments and types of information Qualifications Competencies and Qualifications: + EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:High School Diploma or GED required. Bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.S.) from four-year college or university Environmental Sciences, Natural Resources Management, Environmental Communications, Water Resources or related field; Or pursuing a technical degree from a Technical, Scientific or Trade Institution in Environmental Studies, Water Treatment, Wastewater Treatment, Watershed Science or other related course; or 6 months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred. + CUSTOMER SERVICE:Friendly with strong customer service skills and able to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers,and co-workers. The water conservation intern will occasionally work the Vail Farmers' Market and other relevant public outreach events to talk to our customers about water efficiency. + DATA ANALYSIS:Familiarity with R or other coding languages. Wants to be a part of data collection and analysis to make informed decisions on water conservation + ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS:Assist water conservation staff with organizing and tracking data, using Microsoft Excel, R and/or SQL, LIMS, WaterSmart, and PowerBI. Computer proficiency and experience with Excel are required. + WATER SCIENCE:Working knowledge and understanding of GIS, water conveyance systems, science communication techniques, irrigation system efficiency and native and adapted landscape design is preferred. + POSITIVITY:Positive attitude to complete important but occasionally repetitive or semi- skilled tasks. Enthusiastic about Water and ready to learn. + COMMUNICATION:Must be able to tactfully, directly, respectfully, and professionally communicate in English, both written and verbal. Ability to write reports and communicate research. Demonstrated public speaking skills required, including the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from employees, customers, and the public. Able to ask questions and gather information. Able to maintain confidentiality and appropriately communicate sensitive information. + LICENSES:Must possess a valid Colorado Driver's license and be insurable to drive a district vehicle under District's standards. Pay Range and Benefits: The pay rate for this role is $22.81-$31.94/hour.
