The Industrial Design Program in the School of Design and Engineering at Thomas Jefferson University is seeking applicants for a full-time position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Industrial Design to teach cutting-edge product development processes and skills in an interdisciplinary context informed by technology and actionable user research.


•Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson.


•The ideal candidate should demonstrate experience using current user-centered research
methodologies and working with faculty and students in complex, interdisciplinary collaborative
projects.


•They will establish a research and education program that explores product design and development
processes, in the context of current industry issues (collaboration, design for regulated industries,
intellectual property, design for multiple user/customer stakeholders).


•The successful candidate will be responsible for establishing a research agenda, pursuing
interdisciplinary and industry/nonprofit collaborations, generating scholarly work, and demonstrating
potential in securing funding for projects.


•Additional responsibilities include curriculum development, active participation in recruitment efforts,
and engagement in service to the program, college, university, community, and profession.


•Teach at least one 4-5 credit studio and one 3-credit support course in the BS and/or MSID programs
each semester


•Plan and develop projects with industry and other outside partners.


•Participate in and help plan student recruitment activities.


•Develop and maintain an active program of research and scholarship.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Education: Terminal (MFA, MID or equivalent studio-based) degree in Industrial Design from an accredited university, awarded by August 15, 2024.

Experience: Minimum 3-4 years of professional design experience; consulting experience is a plus. Minimum 2-3 years teaching experience (can include adjunct teaching).

Competencies (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required):


•Strong written and spoken English.


•Strong understanding of and interest in collaborative design and innovation processes, and passion for
applying these principles to current and emerging problems.


•Strong knowledge of team-based product development processes, especially in high-technology
industries. Medical/healthcare or sports/active/outdoor design experience is a plus.


•Strong knowledge of and interest in design history and theory, and ability to apply these principles in
teaching.


•Collaborative by nature; demonstrated ability to work with a diverse group of people
