Position Summary

The Vice President/Senior Vice President, Medical Affairs will be a leader of the global medical affairs function to be built and grown at Annexon Biosciences. This role will ultimately be responsible for representing Annexon Biosciences with a network of external thought leaders and driving Global Medical Affairs activities in complement-mediated diseases in neurodegeneration, ophthalmology, and immunology.


Responsibilities

  • As a key member of the leadership team, provide deep medical and scientific expertise on medical affairs, launch, and lifecycle strategies
  • Lead the full spectrum of the Medical Affairs functions that are responsible for the development and implementation of the Global and US medical strategy across the following areas:
    • Medical Affairs Operations - focused on communication, medical education, advisory management, and patient advocacy
    • Medical Science Liaison - directed at work with practicing physicians, key opinion leaders, academic physicians, and other health care providers who deliver care to the targeted patient populations for which Annexon products are directed
    • Publications - accountable for developing and executing a comprehensive portfolio and program-specific publications plan
    • Health Economics and Health Outcomes - aimed at developing and maintaining health economic models to evaluate the cost-effectiveness, budget impact, and economic value of our pharmaceutical products and designing, implementing, and overseeing outcomes research studies and real-world evidence to enumerate the clinical, economic, and humanistic value of our products
    • Product Specialists and Medical Advisory - prepared to respond to incoming queries from providers, caregivers, and patients
    • Regulatory Response - accountable for the response to all queries inbound from worldwide health authorities
  • Partner closely with the organization in the establishment of our market access strategies that enables plans for pricing, reimbursement, and access
  • Establish appropriate strategic partnerships with internal leaders in clinical development, regulatory affairs, safety, operations, research, and commercial
  • Extend and grow the established professional relationships with the external expert community to maintain cutting edge knowledge about the disease areas in which we operate, standards of practice within those areas, and the evolving unmet medical need
  • Enrich the relationship we have with patients and patient advocacy groups for both clinical trials and commercial planning, and understanding of needs that we can better serve
  • Represent Annexon as an organization, and present data at advisory boards, Board Director meetings, clinical investigator meetings, congresses, symposia, and other scientific fora
  • Remain at the forefront of the relevant science and competitive landscape
  • Collaborate with legal, compliance, and regulatory authorities to ensure proper and ethical interactions between medical affairs personnel and external stakeholders

Requirements

  • Advanced degree (MD, PhD, or PharmD) preferred
  • A minimum of 15 years' Medical Affairs experience within the biopharma industry
  • Prior experience in product launch or launches, particularly in rare disease, neurology, and/or ophthalmology
  • Therapeutic area expertise and knowledge in areas such as immunology, neurology, and/or ophthalmology
  • Knowledge of, and experience within, the antibody and small molecule area
  • A strategic innovator with a successful track record of leading a company through multiple therapeutic areas from a medical affairs perspective
  • Skilled at engagement and scientific exchange with the external medical community, and has an established network of medical and clinical contacts
  • Proven ability to lead, manage, and motivate others in a multi-functional matrix environment
  • Pharmaceutical product development, product lifecycle, and commercialization process knowledge with an understanding of other functions, including but not limited to HEOR, value & access, safety, and regulatory
  • Experience in global/regional/local medical practice and healthcare ecosystems
  • Knowledge of Good Clinical Practices (GCP), region regulations and guidelines, and applicable international regulatory requirements
  • Finance/budgeting and resource management experience
  • Skilled at effectively presenting ideas and documenting complex medical/clinical concepts in both written and oral communication
  • History of solving problems while exhibiting superior judgment and a balanced, realistic understanding of issues
  • Ensures representation of the patient perspective/ "voice of patient"
