Shimmick is seeking a Utility Worker based out of Jersey City, NJ.

Utility workers are responsible for the maintenance of the area around tracks, right of way, stations, offices and other project property. Work may be done alone or as part of a team. Utility Workers may be required to drive a company vehicle. Utility workers are required to learn and abide by the Hudson Bergen Light Rail Rules Book and other company policies.


The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Cleaning of facilities at various locations including bathrooms and windows
  • Removal of debris along track right of way including culverts and ditches
  • Mopping and waxing of floors
  • Trash disposal
  • Landscaping and snow removal
  • Assist during emergencies to restore service
  • Painting
  • Perform all other duties assigned

All internal candidates interested in applying must have a satisfactory discipline record during the period from 3/20/2023 - 3/20/2024 . Internal candidates interested in applying must have completed the probationary period, if applicable, for the position they currently maintain as specified in the agreement between Shimmick and the TWU Local 229.


Education:

  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED) required

Experience:

  • One year of similar work experience
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with no suspensions or moving violations within the past 3 years
  • At interview, present a satisfactory driver's abstract showing violations, suspensions and points for the past 3 years
  • Demonstrated ability to follow verbal or written instructions and complete assigned work in a timely manner

Additional Requirements:

  • Report for work on time
  • Abide by the attendance policy
  • Must be willing to work various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to walk on uneven surfaces and loose material safely in day, night or portable lighting conditions.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions including wind, extreme cold and heat on, or in close proximity to, railroad tracks.
  • Learn and practice safe work habits.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Must be able to walk long distances, up and down changing grades, and along uneven surfaces safely.
  • Must have good visual acuity, including ability to distinguish colors, depth perception and peripheral vision plus normal night vision.
  • Ability to listen for, distinguish and separate, sounds around heavy machinery, noisy equipment and tools. Must be able to hear and understand voices that are near and or at a distance.
  • Must be able to demonstrate agility and coordination while lifting, stooping, carrying heavy loads.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One year of outdoor or janitorial work experience preferred
  • Watchman protection. Must be qualified to become a watchman after 3 months from date of hire.

Additional Information:

  • This position will require working nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
  • Qualified applicants who are offered a position must pass a pre-employment substance abuse test and and DOT physical.
  • This position does not include sponsorship for United States work authorization.

The salary offered for this position is $18.89 per hour.
