Utility Worker I - WasteWater Treatment Plant Pay Range: $21.10 - $29.70 NATURE OF WORK This is an entry level position performing general labor tasks that support the various departments of the Department of Utilities. Utility Workers may be assigned to one designated utility (i.e., water/sewer, gas, distribution, wastewater treatment plant, etc.) or they may work with various departments at different times. This position is intended to be an entry level transitional position that allows the incumbent the opportunity to gain exposure to and knowledge of the various utility departments within the City. It is expected that Utility Workers are preparing for and will move into a higher skilled position within the Department of Utilities. EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following examples of work are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive Performs general labor activities to support the Utility departments. Perform general construction and maintenance. Perform other work which is consistent with the essential functions of the job. Perform preventative maintenance checks on equipment. Assist in installation, maintenance, and repair of utility assets. Operate light and heavy equipment including trenchers, backhoes, compressors, composting equipment including screener, turner, and loader. Perform building maintenance. Ability to operate mowing and spraying equipment for yard maintenance. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Graduation from high school or equivalent. Punctuality, consistent attendance. A CDL may be required for some departments. Any combination of training and experience that provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills: DESIREABLE KNOWLEDGES, ABILITIES AND SKILLS General mechanical aptitude. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade. Ability to perform prolonged manual labor and properly use hand tools. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to interpret diagrams and plans. Skill in the use and care of the tools, equipment, vehicles, and materials used in the work. Ability to learn new skills and information and retain this knowledge. Ability to work scheduled hours. This position may require evenings, weekends, overtime, on-call hours, and/or rotating schedules. Ability to work inside and outside, in varying weather conditions along with lifting and carrying heavy equipment and materials. Ability to learn computer software packages. Ability to work in trenches, pull on pipe wrenches, work in a gaseous environment or around high voltage. Ability to work well with a variety of individuals, including co-workers, supervisors, and the public. NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Employee must possess and maintain a valid Nebraska Driver's License when operating a vehicle. When operating equipment that falls under the Nebraska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) status, the employee is required to possess and maintain the proper license and endorsements as a mandatory condition of employment.
