Summary:

  • Dialysis technicians are medical specialists trained in the operation of a dialysis machine.
  • Their primary duties include monitoring patients undergoing dialysis treatment, ensuring usage of the machine is safe and secure, and adjusting patient fluid removal rates as required.
  • Reports to the Supervisor of the Unit.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse.
  • Weighs patient and takes vital signs before, during and after treatment
  • Sets up dialysis machines in readiness for therapy and breaks machine down after therapy based on company protocol.
  • Follow established safety and infection control precautions, policies and procedure.
  • Perform catheter care under the direction of a registered nurse.
  • Cannulate effectively as per protocol and under the supervision of a nurse
  • Collects information for the charge nurse during patient assessment and evaluation
  • Collects Pre and Post dialysis blood samples.
  • Spins blood sample before temporary cold storage.
  • Keeps work area clean.
  • Performs monthly drain maintenance.
  • Collects water samples for testing as needed.
  • Trouble-shoots machine problems as needed.
  • Documents vital signs and machine pressures as per protocol.
  • Treat patients and families with respect.

Dialysis Tech Job Description:

Education & Experience Requirements:

  • Must complete a training program that is approved by the medical director and governing body, under the direction of a registered nurse, focused on the operation of kidney dialysis equipment and machines, providing direct patient care, and communication and interpersonal skills, including patient sensitivity training and care of difficult patients.
  • One year of current Dialysis Tech experience is required.
  • Current AHA BLS.
