Summary: Under the general direction and supervision of the Trauma Program Manager and Trauma Medical Director, abstracts, submits, analyzes, develops, and designs accurate quality data for the Summa Health System Trauma Registry. Identifies, analyzes, and interprets trends or patterns in data and provide insights and recommendations to the Trauma Program to support performance Improvement, research, and injury prevention activities. Demonstrates knowledge and ability in trauma registry methodology, case abstraction, data entry, coding and ad hoc reporting on trauma patients according to the guidelines established by the American College of Surgeons, Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP), the State of Ohio Trauma Acute Care Registry (TACR) and the Northeastern Ohio Regional Trauma Network (NORTN). Performs all data collection, abstraction, and entry of all trauma patients into the Trauma Registry. The registrar assigns ICD-10CM & PCS, ISS, AIS, and E-Codes. Performs building and generation of applicable reports as requested by the Trauma Program within the trauma registry database. Collects, abstracts, and accurately enters trauma patient information in the trauma registry in a timely manner. Complete final entry of patient data no later than 60 days post discharge. Assists in the preparation for American College of Surgeons Level I trauma center verification. Documents and records data with an 80% or higher accuracy. Formal Education Required: a. Associates degree in technology, coding, medical/nursing/biological science, Health Information Management or related field, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience that has provided knowledge of registry, healthcare clinical or clerical processes. Experience & Training Required: a. Three (3) years' experience in Health Care information, clinical or administrative information systems in a health care environment preferred. b. Trauma, Burn or Cancer Registry experience preferred. c. Experience in ICD-10CM & PCS coding, AIS/ISS coding and scoring, E codes preferred. d. Abbreviated Injury Scale Certification (CAISS) designated by the AIS Certification Board, and/or Certified Specialist in Trauma Registries (CSTR) designation by The American Trauma Society's Trauma Registry and Data Council (TRDC) preferred. Other Skills, Competencies and Qualifications: a. Proficiency with Epic and Trauma Registry software products, or computer programs/software- database software. b. Typing speed of 30 wpm c. Knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy d. Proficient in Microsoft Office; especially Excel, computerized databases, Electronic Medical records e. Must maintain confidentiality/HIPAA compliance of patient records. f. Ability to maintain internal and external working relationships with Trauma Program Staff and other Trauma Data Analysts and Trauma Registrars to ensure strong collaboration around data collection and reporting activities. g. Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with physicians and other hospital personnel. h. Ability to screen and accurately abstract pertinent diagnoses, procedures and clinical data from the medical record. i. Demonstrates ability to collate and assess, analyze and interpret raw data, ability to build and trauma registry reports. j. Ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy in data collection and data validation. k. Strong organizational skills l. Ability to operate a PC and related business machines with accuracy. m. Ability to be self-directed in executing responsibilities within a team structure and take initiative to contribute beyond the scope of formal duties (e.g., suggesting innovative ideas and providing feedback on a team's direction) n. Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment o. Ability to successfully complete the American Trauma Society Registrar Course or State equivalent within 1 year of hire as required by the American College of Surgeons p. Ability to successfully complete the Association of Advancement of Automotive Medicine Abbreviated Injury Scaling course within 1 year of hire as required by the American College of Surgeons q. Ability to achieve a minimum of 8 hours of trauma related continuing education annually as required by the American College of Surgeons r. Ability to participate in an ICD-10 course or refresher course every 5 years. Level of Physical Demands: a. Sedentary: Exerts up to ten pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently $22.39/hr - $26.87/hr The salary range on this job posting/advertising is base salary exclusive of any bonuses or differentials. Many factors, such as years of relevant experience and geographical location are considered when determining the starting rate of pay. We believe in the importance of pay equity and consider internal equity of our current team members when determining offers. Please keep in mind that the range that is listed is the full base salary range. Hiring at the maximum of the range would not be typical.
