JOB SUMMARY
To perform a variety of semi-skilled and unskilled manual tasks under general supervision, and be responsible for safe servicing, general cleaning, light maintenance and fueling of Port Arthur Transit (PAT) revenue fleet and support vehicles. To be responsible for maintenance and custodial services to facilities and grounds in support of mass transit services provided to the general public.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives supervision from the Transit Maintenance Supervisor.

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES - Essential and other important duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Perform cleaning service for buses and support vehicles, to include regular washing of outside and inside of vehicles, with periodic major cleaning tasks to maintain vehicle cleanliness including proper clean-up of body fluid spills.
Perform routine duties at the fuel island to include checking all vehicle fluid levels and adding appropriate fuels as needed, fueling vehicles, sweeping and vacuuming vehicles, running vehicles through automated bus wash, checking tire pressure and exchanging fare box vaults.
While cleaning vehicles, inspects for defects, loose fasteners or connectors, mirrors, etc. Reports information to maintenance personnel or supervisor for repair if necessary.

Assists in the maintenance, accountability and proper storage of cleaning supplies and equipment and notifies the shop supervisor of needs.

Maintains order of cleaning supplies and cleanliness of fuel island and other assigned work areas.

Sweeps, cleans and maintains buildings and other facilities.

Assists in keeping the facility grounds clean by picking up trash, keeping oil dry on spills, sweeping up used oil dry and properly disposing it as needed.

Perform facilities maintenance related functions such as landscape maintenance , custodial duties as needed and operate power tools.

Assist in performing minor maintenance and repairs to facilities, grounds and structures, including periodic preventative maintenance, inspection and repairs resulting from vandalism and emergencies.
Maintain daily logs and complete work requests on assignments.
Lift, carry and move office furniture and equipment using moving equipment as well as manually.

Trim hedges, spray and prune flowers, trees and shrubs and mow grounds.
Perform maintenance and custodial services to transit facilities and passenger shelters such as mowing and weed control, garbage removal, cleaning floor drains, cleaning floors and windows, cleaning restrooms and office areas, painting and repair services, etc.
Operate and performs daily maintenance of assigned equipment used in transit's maintenance work, including manual, power and riding mowers, tractors, chainsaws, blowers, weed eaters and edgers and other assigned equipment.
Maintain sanitary equipment.
Responsible for batteries; service, charges, moves and change-out. Operates battery-charging equipment.
Make minor repairs/adjustments to PAT operated vehicles as directed.
Complete all required reports, lists and records in a timely and accurate manner.
Perform the duties of a Bus Operator when required.
Perform routine light maintenance and repairs to transit vehicles such as replacing mirrors and headlights, changing windshield wipers, checking and changing tires, tire mounting, air and fuel filters, and other vehicle parts requiring routine maintenance.
Drive buses and service vehicles at the bus garage to and from road calls and other off-site servicing locations.
Park buses and coordinate bus assignments.
Perform all work duties and activities in accordance with PAT policies, procedures and safety practices in a timely manner.
Performs related work/duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:
Routine procedures used in performing service functions on automotive equipment.
Effective methods and techniques of building and grounds maintenance acquired on the job.
General operating features of buses and servicing requirements of motor vehicles.

Simple mechanical principles and procedures of safety precautions to use when working in and around motor vehicles.

Proper use of tools and equipment used in general maintenance, repair and servicing of grounds and motor vehicles.

Ability to :
Operate the following equipment and tools: buses, service vehicles, mechanical hand tools, standard garage equipment, automated bus washer, building and grounds maintenance tools and equipment and all PAT operated vehicles.
Work cooperatively and to maintain effective working relationships to accomplish job responsibilities.
Quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology.
Follow oral and written instructions.
Workday shift, night shift and weekends.
Perform a variety of physically demanding cleaning and maintenance tasks for extended periods of time.
Able to complete, fill-out written records, reports and forms.
Must be able to speak, read and write English.
Have predictable and reliable attendance.

Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:
  • excessive noise/vibration
  • making observations
  • operating assigned equipment
Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following:
  • extreme temperatures, humidity and wetness
  • sitting, standing, walking, bending, lifting and reaching
  • stooping, kneeling, crawling and twisting
  • driving, steering and pushing/pulling
  • lift and carry up to 50lbs.
Effectively deal with personal danger which may include exposure to:
  • dust, gas fumes, odors, chemicals and toxic substances
  • explosive or electrical and mechanical hazards.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES - Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience and Training:
Associate's degree from an accredited college or university related to facility, mechanical or construction courses, with a minimum of one (1) year of experience in general mechanic services and/or basic preventative maintenance, cleaning and servicing autos and building and ground maintenance.

OR

High school diploma, GED or equivalent with a minimum of two (2) years of experience in general mechanic services and/or basic preventative maintenance, cleaning and servicing autos and building and ground maintenance.

License or Certificate:
Possession of an appropriate Texas Class B Commercial Driver's License or permit, with Passenger Endorsement.
