Job Details The successful candidate may be offered a position in either the Traffic Signal Technician I or the Traffic Signal Technician II classification. The range for the Traffic Signal Technician I is $27.45 - $33.63 per hour; and for the Traffic Signal Technician II is $28.82 - $35.31 per hour. The City of Plano is looking for innovative and forward-thinking people to join our team as a Traffic Signal Technician I or II in the Signal Department. As a Signal Technician, you will be responsible for maintaining the Signal Cabinets and Signal Lights functionalities in the City Of Plano. Will also need to be on call for a week once every 5th week. A successful candidate will have: High School Diploma or GED equivalent preferred. Two (2) years of experience in the installation, repair and maintenance of electrical and electronic signal and traffic control equipment. Class C Drivers license. IMSA Traffic Signal Technician II preffered Communicating clearly both verbally and in writing; Safety practices and procedures; proper and efficient use of hand and power tools; methods of tool and equipment maintenance; traffic control and barricade placement. Distinguishing Characteristics: This is the entry-level classification in the Traffic Signal Technician series. The incumbent follows routine procedures and guidelines in the application of prescribed duties and works under close supervision with work frequently reviewed by a superior. This classification is distinguished from the Traffic Signal Technician II in that the latter performs more complex technical duties requiring a higher level of knowledge and skill. Examples of ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Management reserves the rights to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job. Inspects traffic signal equipment to ensure that signalized intersections are operating as programmed. Installs, troubleshoots, repairs and maintains the traffic signal equipment. May coordinate and direct traffic signal personnel in the technical applications of signal construction, repair and maintenance. Assists in the construction of traffic signal equipment. Maintains daily work records. May be required to operate equipment, such as aerial man lift or backhoe/trencher, as required. Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential. Marginal Duties: Performs other duties as assigned. Typical Decisions: The incumbent inspects and troubleshoots traffic signal equipment to identify and correct malfunctioning equipment. Minimum Qualifications: Knowledge of: Electrical codes applicable to the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical circuits and wiring systems; methods and techniques used in the installation, repair and maintenance of electrical and electronic signal and traffic control equipment; safety processes, procedures, and practices. Skill in: Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing; operating a computer terminal and peripheral equipment; conducts tests through electronic functional and other testing processes; installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical wiring systems, equipment devices and controls; operating bucket trucks. Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent. Experience: One (1) year of experience in the installation, repair, and maintenance of electrical and electronic signal and traffic control equipment. Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements Licenses and Certifications: Texas Class C driver's license (must obtain within 30 days of hire per state law). Certification Level I preferred with the International Municipal Signal Association. Traffic Signal Technician II Distinguishing Characteristics: This is the journey-level classification in the Traffic Signal Technician series that follows diversified procedures and implements processes to accomplish end results, within guidelines. Immediate supervision is available upon request. Examples of ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Management reserves the rights to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job. Tests and repairs signal equipment to the component level, including electromechanical, analog and microprocessor controlled equipment. Inspects traffic signal equipment to ensure that signalized intersections are operating as programmed. Coordinates and directs traffic signal personnel in the technical applications of signal construction, repair and maintenance. Installs, troubleshoots, repairs and maintains traffic signal equipment. Assists in the construction of traffic signal equipment. Maintains daily work records. Assists Traffic Operations Engineer in the operational capabilities of microcomputer controllers. Leads the work activities of Traffic Signal Technician I. Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential. Marginal Duties: Performs other duties as assigned. Typical Decisions: The incumbent inspects and troubleshoots traffic signal equipment to identify and correct malfunctioning equipment. Minimum Qualifications: Knowledge of: Electrical codes applicable to the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical circuits and wiring systems; methods and techniques used in the installation, repair and maintenance of electrical and electronic signal and traffic control equipment. Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements Licenses and Certifications: Texas Class C driver's license (must obtain within 30 days of hire per state law). Conditions of Employment: Must pass a drug test, driver license check, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (for positions requiring access into Police buildings) and social security number verification check. Physical Demands and Working Conditions: Must possess mobility to work in and around City buildings, intersections, and facilities, to operate a motor vehicle and drive on surface streets; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform light to medium physical work, to work in confined spaces and around machines, and to operate varied hand and power tools and equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate above-mentioned tools and equipment. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, and reach when completing maintenance and repairs. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 60 pounds. Employees work in and around buildings and facilities and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibrations, heights, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes.
