Job Title: Transportation Specialist
Reports to: Asst Director of Transportation & Operations
Dept./School: Transportation
Exemption Status: Non-Exempt

Primary Purpose:
Responsible for all aspects of driver training including onboarding, retraining, continuing education, new CDL acquisition training, accident investigation, curriculum development and implementation, and entry level driver training documentation. Responsible for providing industry-leading training to all Midway ISD drivers. Responsible for student management reporting to the appropriate campus personnel, school bus incident video review, and student management training and communication with drivers and aides. Assist in monitoring and answering two-way radio calls, dispatching vehicles, placing phone calls and answering phones, conveying necessary information to drivers and parents, monitoring vehicle locations using GPS, monitoring weather conditions using online access, and utilizing appropriate communication techniques and software to accurately communicate with parents and community members. Assist in home-to-school and schoolto-home vehicle and personnel assignments for route coverage.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:
Valid Texas A or B Commercial Driver License with Passenger & School Bus Endorsement
Texas School Bus Driver Certification
TEEX Train The Trailer Certification or willing to obtain within 90 days of hire
Child seat securement certification preferred
Wheelchair securement certification preferred

Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Ability to pass drug and alcohol test
Ability to pass annual DOT physical
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
Ability to develop curriculum-based instruction for driver training
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
Ability to effectively operate computer software including internet, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, District Travel Software, GPS Software, Fuel Management Software, etc.
Ability to maintain an organized working environment
Ability to read and provide directions from a map
Ability to effectively respond to emergencies
Having working knowledge of student transportation operations
Have working knowledge of school bus schedule practices

Experience:
Two years verifiable school bus driving experience
Two years driver training experience preferred

Major Responsibilities and Duties:
1. Continually develop driver training curriculum while adhering to Federal, State, and Local guidelines.
2. Maintain up to date credential documentation for all Midway ISD drivers.
3. Maintain bi-annual MVR review for all Midway ISD drivers.
4. Develop robust driver training program to encompass all drivers from new hires to seasoned veterans including continuing education.
5. Participate in accident/incident investigation and review board.
6. Develop robust bus aide training program for all aides from new hires to seasoned veterans including continuing education.
7. Provide student management training exercises for drivers and aides.
8. Provide student management documentation and videos to appropriate campus administration.
9. Operate a school bus as needed to cover routes.
10. Maintain professional communication with customers and other stakeholders by responding promptly and forwarding any concerns to the appropriate Transportation personnel.
11. Provide monthly training reports and appropriate documentation for all training activities.
12. Work irregular hours as needed based on inclement weather, school start-up, emergency response, or other department needs.

Vehicle Operation
13. Follow assigned route and adhere to established schedules as needed.
14. Drive bus to and from extracurricular activities as needed.
15. Check bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation and notify supervisor of needed repairs.
16. Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical failures and complete required reports.
17. Keep records on bus mileage, gas and oil consumption, and number of passengers transported.
18. Keep assigned bus clean and fueled.

Student Management
19. Supervise students while they board and leave the bus and cross the street.
20. Communicate with teachers and parents daily regarding student behavior while on bus.
21. Maintain discipline, report student discipline problems to appropriate personnel.
22. Instruct students on safe riding rules and regulations.

Safety
23. Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
24. Inspect buses by checking fuel, oil, water, tires, lights, brakes, and steering to ensure bus can be operated safely before driving.
25. Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crowbar, and reflector.
26. Correct unsafe conditions in work area that could cause an accident and inform supervisor of any conditions that are not correctable immediately.
27. Install snow chains during inclement weather.
28. Report any hazardous conditions along the route.

Other
29. Operate two-way radio equipment to communicate with transportation office.
30. Work irregular hours as needed.
31. Participate in professional development that increases effectiveness.
32. Complete other duties as assigned.

Motion: Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; prolonged driving; moderate walking climbing stairs, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and reaching
Lifting: Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds)
Environment: Work mostly inside; some exposure to extreme temperatures and vehicle fumes
Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours
