THERAPEUTICS CAMP COUNSELOR CLASSIFICATION TITLE: THERAPEUTIC CAMP COUNSELOR (SEASONAL) PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION: This is recreational work of a specialized nature in accordance with the agency purpose of the therapeutic recreation programs in the Recreation Services Division of the Clayton County Parks & Recreation Department. The employee will work directly with children and adults with various physical and/or mental disabilities from the age (6) to (21) in a recreation and leisure summer camp setting. The employees' work is supervised by the Therapeutic Supervisor, Coordinators, Program Supervisor and/or Center Manager. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Assists in planning and implementation of summer camp activities in coordination with the Therapeutic Supervisor, and Coordinator ; activities include but not limited to bowling, swimming, roller skating, arts & crafts, sports activities, songs, drama, and games, leading and/or teaching new games, songs or other activities; helps maintain discipline and order in all outside activity area and inside the community facility; accompanies youth participants on day trips, tours, etc.; assists in supervising the enforcement of rules and regulations and eliminates safety hazards. Performs other related duties as required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Must be a high school graduate or currently in school; some experience working with individuals with disabilities is preferred. Must be 18 years of age or older. Must possess a driver's license or picture I.D. Must possess an original social security card. Knowledge of rules and procedures of variety of games, athletic sports, arts, and crafts preferred. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Individual under consideration for this position will be subject to a criminal background check. Must attend all staff meetings, orientations and training. Requires flexibility and willingness to learn a variety of functional recreational skills. May be required to work up to 32 hours per week-days and times vary. Extensive contact with youth and parents. Requires patience, tact, and willingness to respond to customer need. This is a non-exempt position. Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, and pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (20-50 pounds). Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature extremes, or traffic hazards.
