Job Description and Duties The Teacher, State Hospitals (Adult Education) serves adult students working towards basic skill acquisition to improve and strengthen literacy skills or who may benefit from course work leading to a high school equivalency certificate or high school diploma by providing instruction that is evidence and andragogy research based. The position is responsible for engaging with special education teachers and vocational education instructors to collaborate on the selection and implementation of instructional materials and the use of data to inform instruction. Provides daily direction to classroom paraprofessionals (i.e. Psychiatric Technician trainers, Psychiatric Technician Assistants), and other staff assigned to assist with educational instruction and support to students, provides and directs individualized and group-oriented education, transition, court education if appropriate, and vocational skills training related to the educational program as written in student's Individual Program Plan (IPP). Adheres to and implements all facility policies and procedures. Must possess and maintain a valid Adult Education Teaching Credential issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC), which authorizes the holder to teach the specialty areas (i.e., Academic Subjects, Career Technical Education, etc.) named on the credential in courses organized primarily for adults. CTC State issued credential must be in good standing. This position is not eligible for telework, this position is in person only. This position is eligible for Safety Designation once appointed. Working Conditions TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: The Teacher, State Hospitals (Adult Education) used by the Department of Developmental Services, Porterville Developmental Center (PDC) is responsible for maintaining order and supervising the conduct of students; maintaining the safety of persons and property; and delivering classroom instruction to ensure the achievement of adult students using evidence-based practices and recognized instructional strategies to create a learning environment for students to achieve their learning goals. The Teacher, State Hospitals (Adult Education) incorporates activities and instruction designed to build appropriate social emotional skills; and support the students as they develop academic proficiency. Potential exposure to communicable diseases, blood-borne pathogens, and other conditions common to a clinical nursing environment. Ensures the safety of public, staff, and forensic clients, which may include, but not limited to: escorting forensic clients in the facility; distributing and accounting for all training equipment and supplies to prevent their use as weapons; inspecting facilities to identify security breaches that could lead to the escape of a forensic client; and observing and intervening in forensic client behaviors that may injure people, damage property, or signal impending escape attempts. Required to maintain personal safety by wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and ensuring that the PPE is in good, working condition. TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must possess and maintain sufficient strength, agility, endurance, and sensory ability to perform the duties contained within the duty statement. This position has ongoing responsibility for the protection and safeguarding of the public and property, and regular and substantial contact with forensic individuals. As a condition of employment, incumbents are required to and capable of responding to emergency situations and provide a level of service to the public such that the safety of the public and property is not jeopardized. Employees will be required to perform the following essential functions: must be able to lift 50 pounds without assistance; must be able to participate in client containment, intervention or restraint; must have the ability to work extended hours if so needed.
