Systems Engineer


Summary


The Information Technology Systems Engineer (ITSE) supports the mission by being responsible for effective provisioning, installation/configuration, operation, and maintenance of systems

hardware and software and related infrastructure. This position requires technical research and development to enable on-going innovation. The ITSE ensures that system hardware, operating systems, software, and related procedures adhere to organizational values, enabling staff, volunteers, and partners to effectively perform their business duties.


The tasks involved in this position include the definition of needs, benefits, and technical strategy; research & development within the project lifecycle; technical analysis and design; and support of operations staff in executing, testing, and deploying solutions.

Duties

  1. Engineer solutions for various IT projects and operational needs.
  2. Install new and/or rebuild existing computer servers and configure hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, storage, etc. in accordance with standards and project/operational requirements.
  3. Install and configure application systems such that support infrastructure and operations.
  4. Develop and maintain installation and configuration procedures.
  5. Contribute to and maintain IT systems standards of operation.
  6. Research and recommend innovative, and where possible, automated approaches for system administration tasks. Identify approaches that leverage resources and provide economies of scale.
  7. Perform system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems, and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups.
  8. Perform regular security monitoring, identifying, and mitigating risk.
  9. Perform backup and restore operations, ensuring all required file systems and system data are successfully backed up to the appropriate media and that recovery media is created, and that media is sent off site, as necessary.
  10. Create, and maintain personnel Active Directory objects and schema.
  11. Group Policy management including non-Microsoft application control.
  12. Research and maintain a continuous awareness of cybersecurity issues and protocols.
  13. Provide Tier III/other support per request from various constituencies; investigate and troubleshoot issues.
  14. Repair and recover from hardware or software failures. Coordinate and communicate with impacted constituencies.

Maintenance

  1. Apply OS and application patches and upgrades on a regular basis and upgrade administrative tools and utilities. Configure and/or add new services, as necessary.
  2. Upgrade and configure software that supports GIS infrastructure applications or operational needs.
  3. Maintain operational, configuration, or other procedures.
  4. Perform periodic performance reporting to support capacity planning.
  5. Perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required.
  6. Maintain data center environmental and monitoring equipment.

Communications / Intrapersonal Contacts:

  1. Interpret and/or discuss information with others including providing context for unfamiliar terminology or concepts to users or stakeholders; regularly provide advice and recommend actions involving complex issues. May resolve problems within established practices.
  2. Technical lead coordination of escalated issues and activities of helpdesk staff.
  3. Other duties as assigned by the Director of Information Technology.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Minimum of four (4) years' experience in a similar role
  • Associate Degree or vocational certification required. Bachelor s degree preferred, with a major in Computer Science, Information Systems, or Information Technology.
  • Multifactor authentication implementation and experience, preferred.
  • Cybersecurity experience preferred such as work with Crowdstrike, Darktrace, and Microsoft technologies.

Knowledge

  • Proficient knowledge of Windows Server and all associated features and roles, including but not limited to IIS, DHCP, DNS, File / Print, Group Policy, and Active Directory.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Linux, including but not limited to CentOS and Debian distributions.
  • Experience and proficient knowledge of Office/Microsoft 365, Microsoft Exchange/Online, SharePoint Online, Zoom and Teams.
  • Proven knowledge of physical storage technologies, including but not limited to Fiber Channel and iSCSI SAN, and NAS.
  • Virtualization, including but not limited to VMware ESXI/ vCenter.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle Database, and MySQL.

Skills

  • Microsoft System Center, including Configuration Manager, Operations Manager, Virtual Machine Manager and Service Manager.
  • Wireless technologies, including Wireless Access Points and Controllers.
  • Effective planning and organizational skills; able to prioritize and plan work activities; uses time efficiently and develops realistic action plans; initiative to improve processes.
  • Point of Sale experience, a plus.

Abilities


  • Proven ability of switching and routing (Brocade, Ruckus, Cisco), including firewalls (FortiNet), VLANs, BGP, and VPN technologies.
  • Ability to deploy and complete successful Backup and Recovery processes and deduplication including Rubrik.
  • Demonstrated ability to collect, organize and handle data, create meaningful quantitative reports, and to use these reports in making informed, solid decisions.
  • Demonstrated customer service mindset including dependability.
  • Ability to demonstrate management of multiple, parallel projects, and competing priorities.
  • Able to communicate effectively with respect in both positive and negative situations with strong emphasis on clear communication to diverse end users and groups.

  • This position works primarily Monday through Friday with flexibility for evening and variable hours based on need.
  • Little to no travel is expected for this position.

  • On-site attendance is essential to perform some of the duties of this position.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs. unassisted.
  • This position works in an office environment with long sedentary periods and repetitive wrist and arm movement.
  • The ability to focus, bend carry, reach to the side, front and overhead, push, pull, walk, stand, twist and squat are occasional requirements in a normal office setting.
  • Comfortable working in confined workspace, overhead catwalks, ladders of varied heights and elevated

platform lifts.
