Position Details

Type 10 Drivers - "WE MOVE THE FUTURE."

Type 10 Drivers primarily serve families of students with special needs in passenger van/sedan transportation service to & from school. As a Type 10 Driver you value student safety and providing exceptional service.

When you will work
  • Monday to Friday, 20 hours a week
  • ( 4) hour guarantee per day as a split shift of (2) hours each shift:
    • Morning Shift: 5:45 to 7:00 am
    • Afternoon Shift: 12:45 to 2:00pm
    • Must be able to work both shifts
  • The regular work year is from August to June with summers off
  • Option to bid on mid-day routes or summer routes for additional work hours if desired

What you will do

Under general supervision, drive a type 10 passenger vehicle to transport students safely and efficiently to locations along designated routes. Perform daily safety inspections, prepare a variety of records and reports related to assigned activities and perform other related duties as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS

Type 10 drivers drive vehicles, with up to 9 passenger capacity (plus driver), safely and efficiently to assigned locations along designated routes, transporting students, staff, parents and caregivers to and from school and other special events.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

The classification specification does not describe all duties performed by all incumbents within the class. This summary provides examples of typical tasks performed in this classification.
  • Conduct required pre and post-trip daily safety inspections of type 10 passenger vehicle, inspecting the interior, exterior and engine of the type 10 passenger vehicle. Report exterior damage, mechanical malfunctions or other problems to appropriate personnel. Maintain assigned type 10 passenger vehicle in a clean and safe operating condition. Wash, sweep and clean type 10 passenger vehicle. Check fluid levels, refuel and prepare type 10 passenger vehicles for operation. Drive a type 10 passenger vehicle to transport students safely and efficiently to and from school along designated routes. Pick up and drop off passengers in accordance with specified time schedules and observe legal and defensive driving practices.
  • Maintain order and discipline among passengers on type 10 passenger vehicle while loading and unloading in accordance with applicable District policies. Practice positive behavior management as proscribed by Training and Safety. Prepare unsatisfactory student conduct reports when necessary.
  • Drive type 10 passenger vehicle in varying types of weather conditions using safety equipment as necessary including installing and removing snow tire chains.
  • Determine appropriate action in emergency situations according to established guidelines. Contact appropriate emergency personnel, administer first aid to passengers as needed and prepare accident and incident reports as needed.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the Portland Public Schools Equity Initiative by developing a thorough knowledge and application of the district Racial Educational Equity Policy. Participate in staff development, in-services and training related to diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace and in PK - 12 education. Model appropriate behaviors, develop, recommend and implement improvements to business and school practices and student achievement with awareness and understanding of their impact in a racially and culturally diverse community.
  • Attend safety meetings and driver education and safety programs to maintain current knowledge of safety procedures and emergency equipment in the event of an illness, accident or breakdown. Conduct practice type 10 passenger vehicle evacuations as required. Provide type 10 passenger vehicle evacuation and safety instructions to students and staff in accordance with established guidelines (S.T.O.P.P.S.).
  • Maintain a variety of records and reports related to assigned activities and passengers including mileage reports, student seating charts, time sheets, trip sheets and similar documents.
  • Assist special needs students with a variety of equipment such as wheelchairs, safety vests, oxygen tanks, and other physical assistance items.
  • Report student issues, specifically regarding student safety, physical concerns such as seizures, and other related special needs issues to protect the well-being of students and passengers. Attend training and implement district policy and guidelines related to managing identified issues as directed. Implement appropriate interventions in response to escalating behavioral issues with students, parents, and staff. Interact compassionately with students with a varying spectrum of disabilities and needs.
  • Inform appropriate personnel of routes or students pick up points in need of updating or revising.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Education and Training:

Diploma or equivalent to graduation from high school is required

Possession of a valid driver's license and ability to obtain current Oregon Type-10 Passenger Driver Certification before beginning work is required

Experience:

A clean driving record which is free from incidents for at least 3 years

Any other combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the candidate is likely to possess the skill, knowledge, ability and trait characteristics essential for this classification may be considered

Special Requirements:

Employees are required to maintain a valid driver's license and Type 10 passenger vehicle Driver Certificate issued by the State of Oregon throughout the course of, and as a condition of continued employment.

Candidates for this classification will be required to obtain and submit, at their own expense, a current motor vehicle driving record at the time of appointment. For the purpose of insurability and district liability, employees must meet and maintain the District's safe driving standard throughout the course of employment.
