Reports to: Anesthesiologist Supervisory Role: N/A Procedure: The job description and responsibilities are defined for Nurse Anesthetist in the Surgicenter department at Murfreesboro Medical Clinic below: Job Title: Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) Job Description: The Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) will administer anesthesia, monitor patients' vital signs, and oversee patient recovery from anesthesia. The Nurse Anesthetist may assist anesthesiologist, surgeons and other physicians. Working Conditions Work is performed in an operating room and GI procedure room setting and involves face-to-face communication with patients. Interactions with others is constant and interruptive. There is possible exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, bodily fluids, and other conditions common to medical practice. Varied activities including walking, bending, reaching, lifting (up to 30 pounds), stooping, assisting patients, and sitting and/or standing for extended periods of time may occur (up to 6-8 hours). Also, occasional stress from multiple responsibilities. Job Responsibilities Manages patient airway or pulmonary status using techniques such as endo tracheal intubation and extubation, mechanical ventilation, pharmacological support, and respiratory therapy. Selects, prepares, or uses equipment, monitors, supplies, or drugs, fluids or blood products. Performs pre-anesthetic screenings including physical evaluations and patient interviews, and documents results. Monitors patients' responses including skin color, pupil dilation, pulse, heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, ventilation, or urine output using invasive and noninvasive techniques. Responds to emergency situations by providing airway management, administering emergency fluids or drugs, or using basic or advanced cardia life support techniques. Develops anesthesia care plans. Obtains informed consent from patients for anesthesia procedures. Assesses patients' medical histories to predict anesthesia response. Performs and evaluates the results of diagnostic tests such as radiographs and electrocardiograms. Performs or manages regional anesthetic techniques such as local, spinal, epidural, caudal, nerve blocks and intravenous blocks. Evaluates patients post-surgical or post-anesthesia responses, taking appropriate corrective actions or requesting consultation if complications occur. Administers post-anesthesia medications or fluids to support patients' cardiovascular systems. Discharges patients from post-anesthesia care. Read literature, talks with colleagues, and participates in professional organizations or conferences to keep abreast of developments in nursing. Ability to respond appropriately in emergencies including using CPR. With instruction, perform other duties as required or assigned required skills Demonstrated patient care skills. Strong skills in communicating effectively with co-workers, providers, and patients Ability to conduct daily functions in an appropriate, professional, and compassionate manner Ability to manage/prioritize multiple tasks in an efficient and timely manner Advanced understanding of anesthesia and other critical nursing skills. Effectively utilize computer systems and programs that are necessary to complete daily tasks Appropriate assessment and assistance techniques Education/Experience Requirements Master's degree in nursing with specific emphasis on anesthesia required. At least five years of related experience required. Must hold NBCRNA certification. AHA BLS, and ACLS certification.
