JOB DESCRIPTION

Through the support of the Department of Health Services Allied Health Professional grant, The Wisconsin Valley Hospitals (Amery, Hudson and Westfields) have partnered with the Department of Workforce Development- Bureau of Apprenticeship Standards, Northwood Technical College, and Western Wisconsin Health (Baldwin) to create the first Surgical Technologist Apprenticeship program in WI.

We are seeking .8 FTE Surgical Technologist Apprentices to complete this 2-year program. While on the job, the apprentices attend courses through Northwood Technical College and work alongside our surgical services team to earn an associate degree in Surgical Technology. This is a great opportunity to continue to remain employed with pay and benefits and earn a degree during your working hours without paying for your education. Upon completion of the program, the apprentices will work as Surgical Technologists within a HealthPartners' Surgical Services department.

What is an apprenticeship program?

Apprenticeships combine paid on-the-job training with classroom instruction to prepare individuals for highly skilled careers. Apprentices have a written training agreement with their employer and the State of Wisconsin. The employer agrees to teach the student the skills of the occupation and the apprentice agrees to learn the skills involved and complete the education. Apprentices are paid for their time in classroom instruction and while doing on-the-job training.

What is a Surgical Technologist?

Surgical Technologists, also known as Operating Room Techs or Scrub Techs, work in the operating room to support the needs of the surgeon, CNRAs, nurses and other care team members. Surgical Technologists are tasked with many integral tasks to assist in providing a successful and safe surgery: sterilizing and preparing the room and equipment prior to surgery; maintaining a sterile environment and passing tools to the surgeon during surgery; and continuing to maintain a sterile environment, dressing surgical sites, and ensuring all equipment is accounted for after surgery.

What are the qualifications?

Possess high school diploma or GED
Maintain satisfactory progress in apprenticeship program
Commit for the 2-year education program and a work commitment post-graduation
Must be flexible as this is a brand-new program and we will be learning together

When does the program begin? How does it work?

The official Surgical Tech program will begin in August/September. The selected apprentices will be in a cohort of hopefully 8 through Northwood Technical College. The cohort will be together for the duration of the 2-year program with the instructor. The program instruction will be done virtually or on the New Richmond campus (during your work shift), with on-the-job training at Hudson, Amery, and Westfields Hospital & Clinics. There will be times when the apprentices travel for clinical hours with their cohort. NOTE: There are some pre-requisites to the Surgical Technician program at NTC, which can be completed this summer with courses starting in June. The pre-requisites are online and self-paced courses.
