Responsible for supervising and directing the necropsy technicians/technologists, orchestrating the running of the lab, scheduling and organizing internal and external tissue collections for JMCRS (Jax Mice and Services) and supporting JAX's Pathology functions (e.g. Sick Mouse Program). Organizes laboratory activities, supervises and assists in the training of the necropsy technicians, carries out administrative responsibilities for project planning, orders and tracks supplies, keeps track of metrics for finance, ensures QC is performed, creates and tracks necessary documentation (e.g. SOPs) and performs necropsy tissue collections as needed, all under the direct supervision of the Director of Pathology. The position includes frequent communication with customer service, project managers, and the pathologists, as well as interactions with the business unit, diagnostic lab, in vivo, and scientific services departments. It requires attention to detail, good judgement, diplomacy and accuracy. The incumbent must be a highly motivated self-starter who is pro-active and professional in all work assignments and interactions. The incumbent must have excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to work with computers and software including Microsoft Office. Key Responsibilities: Supervisory duties: Supervise a staff of technicians/technologists in their day-to-day duties. Includes assigning projects/tasks, monitoring work flow, scheduling, and monitoring staff performance and time. Provides direct training of the staff and ensures staff receives training and education as needed from outside sources (e.g. biomethods, safety). Ensures that staff precisely adhere to protocols and policies. Keeps track of staff proficiencies and assigns necropsy orders to staff based on their proficiency. Ensures orders are processed correctly and that Quality Control is performed on all orders. Fosters a positive and productive environment in the lab. Addresses any performance or other issues with the staff and informs the Director of Pathology (+/- HR as needed). Performs quarterly employee reviews as well as their yearly employee performance dialogues. Is involved in the hiring process of any new technicians/technologists. Oversee the lab, including instrument operations and maintaining a safe work environment. Administrative duties: Responsible for scheduling incoming necropsy orders from JMCRS: includes checking Axapta and e-mail at least daily for new orders, communicating with Project Managers/Study Directors/Customer Service as needed regarding projects, assigning projects and tasks to staff, ensuring their completion, confirming that Quality Control is performed, and coordinating delivery of finished projects to end users. Compile and track various service metrics and prepare reports, typically monthly, and contribute to budget preparations. Establish and update lab documents and SOP's as needed by working with the Pathologists and the business unit. Ensure that documentation is properly filled out and ready for each order. Maintain logs, order and manage inventory, and other administrative responsibilities. Necropsy duties: Will be trained and certified to perform all the procedures and necropsies that the Pathology Necropsy service performs. This will allow the supervisor to train and oversee staff as well as assist or fill in as needed. The salary range is $68,344 - $99,099 annually. Salary will be determined based on qualifications and experience. Minimum Qualifications: Knowledge of biological sciences, general chemistry, and mathematics acquired through a Bachelor's program in a biological field or equivalent degree with a strong background in anatomy and knowledge of appropriate collection techniques for downstream processes (histology, DNA/RNA isolation, protein extraction, etc.). A minimum of 3-6 years of laboratory experience working with rodents, and with the ability to use standard laboratory equipment including analytical scale, autoclave, digital calipers, pipettes, pH meter, stir plate, balance, centrifuge, dissecting microscope as well as digital cameras. Exceptional organizational and project management skills, including the ability to plan, schedule, and successfully carry out multiple projects at the same time to successful conclusion with minimal supervision. Excellent attention to detail and ability to perform Quality Control checks on all outgoing projects with superior accuracy. Knowledge of leadership skills and techniques with demonstrated ability to motivate and lead others toward the accomplishment of individual and shared objectives including experience in planning, prioritizing, executing/delivering and assigning work, training staff, and monitoring their daily performance. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a team. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are critical in this position. The ability to communicate effectively with others verbally and in writing to clearly and effectively exchange information specifically when dealing with colleagues and customers in the development of protocols and in the ability to understand the needs of the customers is essential. Demonstrated computer skills with ability to work with Microsoft Office software including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Ability to work with frequent changes in schedules and priorities. Excellent time management skills are essential. Preferred Qualifications: Lean Six Sigma, Leadership, and/or Quality Advocate Training a plus. AALAS Certification, preferably at the LAT or LATG level but will consider ALAT level with equivalent experience.
