Job Description The Salt Lake County Health Department Community Health Division focuses on prevention, promotion, and outreach for countywide health education, health promotion and risk reduction programs in Salt Lake County. This special project internship person will work closely with our Health Department Community Health Coalitions Team and coalitions within Salt Lake County. This staff will assist our staff and community members to identify a communities' readiness to address substance use and opioid misuse prevention following the Community Readiness Model for Change developed by the Tri-Ethnic Center for Prevention Research. The intern will be introduced to a wide scope of prevention and public health disciplines and gain experience in; community health education, qualitative data assessments, communication (verbal and written), community engagement, public/customer service, and community partnerships.Work hours will be scheduled from Monday through Friday 8am to 5pm with flexible hours to accommodate a school or work schedule. Applicants must be currently enrolled or recently graduated from a Bachelor OR Graduate program. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Prepare, implement, and evaluate qualitative research interviews within communities in Salt Lake County Compile information and report on findings back to community partners Solve technical problems with limited supervision Work in the office and the community with Substance Use Prevention staff supporting coalitions MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Have obtained at least sophomore status in a bachelor's degree program or a graduate level program. public health and prevention related, i.e., environmental health, sustainability, health education, public health, behavioral health, or closely related field. Student can receive class credit for this position. Advanced writing and communication skills. Advanced customer service and interpersonal skills. Proficient in Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office. Knowledge of: Prevention science /or public health approach Techniques of qualitative research and data collection Cultural competency and awareness of cultural humility Computer operations and uses, including word processing, graphics, spreadsheets, and presentation design. Effective communication techniques including audio-visual use. Basic knowledge and interest in government/public service. Skills and Abilities to: Advanced English writing skills Intern must be able to always maintain professionalism, even when stressed. Intern will have the opportunity to interact with community and organizational leaders. Intern should have strong organizational and time management skills. Intern should have the ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team. Intern should be adaptable with a strong attention to detail. Intern should also feel comfortable explaining concepts verbally. Intern should be able to work effectively with people from a variety of social, ethnic, economic, educational, and professional backgrounds. Intern should have interpersonal skills and Maintain strict confidentiality. Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Communicate and deal effectively with public, government, business, and community leaders. Use a word processor/computer. Interpret and follow instructions. Work effectively in team settings.
