Summary This position supervises an assigned group of Substance Abuse Counselors who implement and maintain the facility's drug and alcohol abuse program. Conducts or assists in conducting individual and group counseling sessions and instructional programs. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Supervises Substance Abuse Counselor and reviews and approves their documentation according to state requirements. Participates in orientation of residents regarding the chemical dependency treatment programs. Facilitates and co-facilitates didactic educational presentations, group counseling, and individual counseling sessions. Selects and recommends new instructional materials and program for use in the substance abuse program. Maintains knowledge of new developments in the field of substance abuse. Maintains a collegian relationship with other substance abuse professionals, programs, and associations. Completes required testing, assessment, and psycho-social history on all incoming residents. Develops an individual written program plan for each resident within his/her assigned caseload. Completes all required documentation and/or required forms for those residents who are assigned to his/her caseload. Assists in the coordination of resident program schedules to ensure the needs of the resident and goals set by the Individual Written Program Plan are met. Develops discharge plans and provides follow-up on residents who are released from the program. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications Minimum Requirements An associate degree in counseling, counseling related field or substance abuse related field from an accredited institution and three (3) years and three thousand (3,000) client contact hours under appropriate supervision of experience in the practice of alcohol and drug abuse counseling and two hundred (200) hours of face-to-face supervision. An applicant may be Approved who has education and training to include two hundred seventy-six (276) clock hours in the following areas: o Ninety (90) hours in the field of alcohol abuse o Ninety (90) hours in the field of drug abuse o Ninety (90) hours in the field of counseling o Six (6) hours that pertain specifically to alcohol and drug counseling ethics training OR - A bachelors degree in a counseling related fried or a substance abuse related field from an accredited institution and two (2) years and two thousand (2,000) client contact hours under appropriate supervision of experience in the practice of alcohol and drug abuse counseling and one hundred (100) hours of face-to-face supervision. An applicant may be approved who has education and training to include two hundred seventy six (276) clock hours in the following areas: o Ninety (90) hours in the field of alcohol abuse o Ninety (90) hours in the field of drug abuse o Ninety (90) hours in the field of counseling o Six (6) hours that pertain specifically to alcohol and drug counseling ethics training (must be acquired two (2) years prior to submission of an application) OR - A masters or doctoral degree in counseling, a counseling related field or substance abuse related field and training that includes two hundred seventy six (276) clock hours with ninety (90) hours in each area of alcohol, drug abuse, counseling and six (6) hours of professional ethics. One (1) year and one-thousand (1,000) client contact hours under appropriate supervision of experience in the practice of alcohol and drug abuse counseling and fifty (50) hours of face-to-face supervision. An applicant may be approved who has two-hundred seventy-six (276) clock hours in education or training. Verification of current license or certification issued by the appropriate examining board under the law of any other state or territory of the United States, the District of Columbia or any foreign nation. Previous experience working within a correctional setting is desirable. Working knowledge of the Twelve-Step Program of Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. Ability to interact in professional manner in both individual and group counseling settings. Personal commitment to uphold and adhere to the Code of Ethics as outlined by the New Mexico Counseling and Therapy Practice Board Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to work with a team of professionals and have the ability to implement team strategy approaches to work assignments. Ability to work with computers and the necessary software typically used by the department. GEO Secured Services
