Job Title: Student Research Assistant Department: FAES Entomology-JM The Forest Insect Ecology Lab (PI Dr. Kayla Perry) is seeking student research assistants for the 2024 summer to support ongoing research projects in the field and laboratory. Projects focus on the responses of arthropod communities to a variety of disturbances such as emerald ash borer, elm zigzag sawfly, invasive understory plants, and forest management. Responsibilities will include setting/collecting traps in the field, plant identification, processing and sorting insect samples, identifying insect specimens, recording and archiving data, and general laboratory organization and cleaning. Additional tasks could be assigned based on interest. Position will require some travel and overnight stay out of state. Students will be permitted to work 38 hours during the summer and/or academic breaks. Responsibilities: Support field research projects - 70% Sample sorting and identification - 20% Laboratory cleaning & maintenance - 10% Additional Information: Interest and willingness to learn about and work with insects is required. A background in biological or agricultural sciences is required. Students must have a driver's license. Students should have the ability to work independently once trained, the ability to work outside in varying weather conditions, and strong organizational skills. Experience working in the field or laboratory is preferred, but not required. Experience with plant and/or insect identification is a major plus, but also not required.
