JOB SUMMARY

Performs patient care custodian duties and assists with nursing duties in caring for patients including psychiatric and rehabilitative patients. Performs direct and indirect patient care activities according to established policies and procedures, observes and reports changes in patient conditions and maintains a safe and clean patient and environment.

Reporting Structure: Reports to the Department Director and/or mentor or designee

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Education

High school graduate and currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program

Successful completion of nursing assistant course and completion of state requirements for certification preferred.

Work Experience

Previous hospital experience preferred.

License/Certification

Basic Life Support (BLS)

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Provides for patient's personal hygiene: gives bedpans, urinals, baths, backrubs, shampoos, and shaves, and assists with showers.

• Provides for activities of daily living: assists with meals and feeds patients; ambulates, turns, and positions patients; provides fresh water and nourishment between meals.

• Assists the nurse with enemas, douches, non-sterile dressings, surgical preps, ice packs, heat treatments, sitz and therapeutic baths.

• Performs I&O measurements, checks vital signs and weight, specimen collection, and post-mortem care.

• Provides for comfort needs of patients.

• Works effectively as a team member in the delivery of care and assists in the orientation of new employees.

• Utilizes resources and materials in an efficient and safe manner.

• Maintains a safe and attractive environment for patients and co-workers; transports patients and equipment as appropriate.

• Promptly answers patients' call lights and requests.

• Reports observations of a patient to the nurse caring for the patient to ensure professional assessment.

• Instills confidence in the patient by maintaining a neat and attractive appearance and performing duties in a competent and caring manner.

• Shows dependability by being punctual; maintains consistent attendance.

• Maintains good working relations among all nursing unit personnel and other hospital employees through appropriate communication.

OTHER DUTIES

• With specialized training, and written approval, may perform additional and specialized tasks pertinent to assigned area. Accepts reassignment as needed to provide necessary care for all patients.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Ability to pass all required health and other screening tests including random and reasonable suspicion drug screens.

• Prolonged periods of standing and walking are required.

• Must be able to lift, push, and pull up to 40 pounds during a scheduled work shift.

• Must be able to see with corrective eye wear

• Must be able to hear clearly with assistance

• May be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases

• Able to handle emergency or crisis situations

• Transferring, repositioning patients.

• Reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching for patient care functions.

• Ability to perform effectively in a stressful and fast-paced environment.

• May be required to wear protective equipment as necessary
