General Definition of Work

Performs semiskilled work installing, repairing and maintaining streets, sidewalks, driveways, drainage ways and related facilities, operates a variety of motorized equipment, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the close supervision of the Street Maintenance Supervisor.

Examples of Duties

Essential Functions

Repairs and maintains streets; repairs pot holes in street with asphalt; sets concrete forms; helps pour concrete; performs general landscaping duties upon completion of projects.
Installs, maintains and repairs drainage ways, catch basins, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, driveways, traffic signs, etc.
Mows grass on City property and rights-of-way; edges along City curbing; trims limbs from rights-of-way.
Prepares asphalt materials for resurfacing and patching.
Assists in the demolition of condemned buildings.
Operates equipment such as loaders, dump trucks, mowers and a variety of landscaping and street maintenance equipment; operates medium to heavy construction and specialized equipment in a training capacity and as qualified.
May be required to work outside normal work hours in on-call and emergency situations.
Provides excellent customer service when working with citizens, elected officials, and/or associates.
Completes any other duties assigned by Supervisor.
Supports the overall City organization by executing the directives as set forth by the immediate supervisor and elected officials.

Typical Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Some knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance of the equipment to which assigned; skill in the use of specialized equipment and hand tools to which assigned; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to lift heavy articles; ability to read and write; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions, frequently requires speaking or hearing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting and occasionally requires sitting and climbing or balancing; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration, frequently requires exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and occasionally requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

Special Requirements

Valid commercial driver's license in the State of North Carolina, or the ability to obtain within six months of hire.
