The Sterile Processing Technician decontaminates surgical instruments and equipment as well as inspects and assembles surgical instruments, equipment, trays, and packs. Fills surgery case carts from predetermined listings. May deliver case carts to surgical floor. Assists in record keeping and monitoring equipment operations. Identify and reports supplies, equipment, and procedure problems. May assist in the orientation and continuing training of other Technicians. Performs all duties of a Sterile Processing Technician I and II, including decontamination and sterilization of instruments and equipment; and inspecting and assembling surgical instruments, equipment, trays and packs. Fills surgery case carts from predetermined listings; may deliver case carts to surgical floor. Identifies and reports supply, equipment, and procedure problems. Assist in the orientation and continuing education of lower-level Sterile Processing Technicians. Maintains open lines of communication within the department. Assists with and provides for relief for others. Maintains established departmental standards by following policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, including biological and chemical monitoring, safety, environmental and infection control standards. Renders used items clean and decontaminated manually or mechanically by following established policies and procedures in the decontamination area for instruments, supplies, carts and equipment. Participates in department sterilization objectives by following policy and procedures regarding assembly, inspection, sterilizing, storage and handling of instrument trays, supplies and equipment appropriately. Responsible for management of some mobile equipment used in the patient care areas including maintaining established par level for each area. Performs supply function by inventory of user storage area, replenishment of inventory par levels, and responding to hospital supply needs in a timely and accurate manner. Restock specialty carts/kits that contain vials of numbing medications, saline, limited ointment, IV's, etc. Assures inventory levels maintained by recording supplies/equipment issued, rotation of stock and the maintenance of departmental records reports and files. Responsible for cleanliness of work areas. Operate cleaning equipment and maintain appropriate records according to department standards. Answer department phone calls and relay messages as appropriate. Effectively work with coworkers, supervisor, management and customers. Recognizes malfunctions of instruments and take appropriate action. Assists in training the basic principles of sterile technique and proper operation of a variety of department equipment. Required Qualifications: Coursework/Training Completion of a formal Central Services Technician course or successfully challenged course test. Within 1 year of hire National Certified Registered Central Service Technician - Healthcare Sterile Processing Association Within 1 year of hire National Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician - Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution 5 Years Related experience with surgical instrumentation in hospital sterile processing/central service environment required.
