How You'll Contribute The Communications Division uses creative and strategic tools to further the mission of the National Geographic Society (NGS), while maintaining our place as one of the world's most trusted non-profit organizations and global brands. The Division's creative minds develop and execute mission-driven, on-brand and strategic communications, marketing, creative and media for the National Geographic Society and amplify this content on our own channels, across National Geographic Partners (NGP) and through outside partners and earned media. The Division is composed of six integrated departments: Engagement and Marketing Strategy, Brand, Creative, Strategic Communications, Executive Communications, and Content and Editorial. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Impact Communications, the Specialist, Impact Communications is a member of the Strategic Communications team and supports NGS by amplifying the work of our Explorers and Impact initiatives. In this role you will support the implementation of the Society's strategic plan (NG Next), and think critically on how to amplify our programs, impact and vision to global audiences using a diverse mix of communication tools, platforms and partnerships. This role will work closely with all teams within the broader Strategic Communications department. Your Impact Responsibilities Include: 1. Impact Communications Materials Development - 50% Support the team in developing, editing and publishing content for the Society's various communications channels. This includes press releases, blog posts, social media posts and talking points. Works with Strategic Communications team members and designers to oversee the development of visual assets by managing approval processes for items including image use, website updates, event collateral and promotion materials. Assist with creative and photo intake requests for content design. Develop press kits and social media toolkits that include branded images and caption usage requirements. 2. Partnership/Stakeholder Relationship Management - 25% Serve as a communications liaison with the National Geographic Society's community of Explorers to handle inquiries related to brand engagement, media support and scientific papers. Liaise with program team for communications requests and key moments. 3. Media Outreach and Support - 15% Support the development and implementation of proactive earned media strategies that elevate Explorers and Impact programs Develop pitch notes and conduct outreach to media Monitor news coverage and maintain team's press tracker Work with coordinators and contractors to pull together press clips and weekly reports Monitor the Society's pressroom inbox, posting press releases and blog posts 4. Operations and Administrative Support - 10% Manage the engagement calendar by ensuring it is up to date Maintain calendar invites, agendas and meeting notes for calls What You'll Bring Education Bachelor's degree preferred Minimum Years of Experience 3-5 years of experience working in communications-related field Necessary Knowledge and Skills Detail-oriented, organized, and capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously (sometimes with tight deadlines) Experience pitching media, working with the press and familiarity with print, broadcast and digital outlets Strong writing and editing abilities with knowledge of AP Style Ability to work well with others and independently as needed Desired Qualifications Understanding of different communications platforms, and how to best communicatee with the public i.e. website, social media, press releases, blog posts, etc. A thirst for learning and an appreciation for the culture, people and places that create the wonders of our world A willingness to act as a National Geographic Ambassador and uphold our values - one of which is that everyone has a story to tell and every story matters Supervision No direct reports Salary Information National Geographic Society offers a competitive and holistic total rewards package. Our compensation structure and transparent pay philosophy are based on industry-specific market data for similar sized nonprofit organizations. The salary range for this position is $65,000 - $77,000. Pay offered to candidates will be based on several factors including but not limited to industry-based or other relevant work experience, education, skills, certifications, and training. As a result, the majority of our staff are Hybrid. Our Hybrid category requires that staff work at Base Camp two days each week: every Tuesday and Wednesday.
