Description

Performs manual labor of more than ordinary difficulty which involves the use of acquired skills. Uses manual and power equipment to perform a variety of tasks pertaining to solid waste and sanitation of grounds, parks, streets and right-of-ways. This is routine work involving the use of skills acquired by experience and on-the-job instruction. Performs demanding physical work for an extended period of time under varying climatic conditions. Subject to weekend and overtime work. Works under the supervision of the Solid Waste and Sanitation Manager who issues oral work orders and inspects work frequently.

Examples of Duties

  • Operates a variety of powered and unpowered equipment to clean streets and parking lots.
  • Picks up trash in parks, parking lots and rights-of-way; removes dead animals on City rights-of-way.
  • Empties public trash receptacles and cigarette urns.
  • Assists street sweeper operator with the cleaning of parking lots and narrow streets where the sweeper cannot safely operate.
  • Assists residential crews in cleaning of vehicles, when necessary.
  • Completes assigned tasks in timely and efficient manner.
  • Performs minor repairs of trash containers; does minor repairs and maintains related equipment of Solid Waste and Sanitation Division.
  • Safely operates and maintains flat bed truck.
  • Assists in the maintenance and cleaning of compactors.
  • Performs general custodial duties at the Solid Waste and Sanitation facility.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Typical Qualifications

High school diploma desired. Completion of 10th grade required. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Driver's License Requirement: Valid Florida Driver's License Classification E.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is regularly required to communicate and exchange information with others. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing and crouching throughout the day. The employee must frequently lift or move items up to 60 pounds and occasionally lift or move items up to 90 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

We offer a complete benefits package to full-time employees including paid health care, dental, vision, retirement, deferred compensation plans, life insurance, long-term disability, and up to 13 paid holidays. The City offers 2 weeks of vacation and 2 weeks of sick leave, which accrues bi-weekly from your first day of work. In addition, the City provides 24 hours of time off for wellness and family, plus $300 per quarter in wellness or childcare reimbursements for non-probationary, full-time employees.

Furthermore, the City pays out accrued leave at 100% for non-probationary employees who leave in good standing and provide a minimum of 2 weeks notice. While there are limits on the vacation leave paid, it is at a minimum of 480 hours and there is no limit on the sick leave paid out. The City also offers an option for employees to cash out up to 2 weeks of sick leave, twice per year (per policy).
