Project/Unit Description The Test Engineering Division (TEN) of the Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS) develops Hardware in the Loop (HITL) test sets, test tools, analysis tools and test methods for US Air Force, Army, Navy sponsors. These systems provide high fidelity simulation and stimulation of real-time Electro-Optical/Infra-Red (EO/ IR), Radio Frequency (RF) and Avionics environments for testing EW and Avionics systems. These systems protect aircraft from adversarial ground and airborne threats. This research is critical for supporting the development, trouble-shooting, analysis and testing of Electronic Warfare (EW) and Integrated EW (IEW) systems. Job Purpose The Software Engineer designs, develops, and tests software applications and products. Additionally, the Software Engineer manages software development teams, provides technical leadership, and establishes software development lifecycle practices and processes. The Software Engineer is proficient in programming languages such as Java, JavaScript, C, C , C , Ruby, Python, Scala, and Groovy. In this role, the Software Engineer requires extensive knowledge of programming languages, software development, computer operating systems, Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD), DevOps, Application Programming Interface (API) development, container development, and distributed systems. The Software Engineer also applies engineering principles to software creation, manages production releases of software, performs code reviews, merges feature development branches, and analyzes and triages issues. The necessary skill areas for the Software Engineer include programming and coding, fundamentals of computer science, software design and architecture development, algorithms and data structures, information analysis, software debugging and testing, and working on development teams. The Software Engineer also works with sponsors to curate requirements, define sprint work items, set priorities for work backlogs, and organize development teams. Key Responsibilities Perform software development, debugging, modification, enhancement, and documentation Design, test, and develop computer software in order to meet program requirements Apply expertise in computing systems to define requirements and develop software designs recognizing limitations of target hardware platforms Develop and maintain kernel and user-level software and scripts Contribute to research reports, presentations, white papers, and competitive proposals Create and analyze network protocols Additional Responsibilities Follow agile software development processes and practices Support translation of system requirements into software requirements and design Work within cross-functional teams to refine requirements, formulate technical approaches, implement designs, review code, and spread knowledge within teams Contribute to automated build processes and continuous integration pipelines Produce and review technical documentation Perform other duties as assigned Required Minimum Qualifications Experience using modern programming languages (C , C , Java or Python) for desktop and/or web applications Proficiency and knowledge of software version control tools and best practices, i.e. Git Preferred Qualifications Active Secret Clearance Experience with full stack web development using React or equivalent web framework Experience with object-oriented development Experience with agile development methodology Experience with continuous integration, pipelines, and other modern software best practices Experience leading software team Experience maintaining and testing software codebases Experience with versioning control systems such as Git Experience programming unit and/or functional software test sets Experience with EW and Avionics Systems architecture, function and interface Experience with relevant interfaces, including MIL-STD-1553, Ethernet, serial, discrete and analog interfaces Travel Requirements Education and Length of Experience Levels 3, 4 This position vacancy is an open-rank announcement.
