Position Description

As a mission-driven school, Burke's is seeking a Humanities teacher who can educate, encourage, and empower girls by designing and implementing student-centered, inquiry-based units to explore our world, its past and present cultures and civilizations, and one who can use these explorations to further develop reading, writing, and literacy skills. With an emphasis on project-based learning, access to a state-of-the-art maker space (Makery), and a commitment to anti-racist education, students should be able to connect their learning to the world around them and see themselves as agents of positive change.

In addition to teaching humanities, responsibilities include advising a group of students to support social-emotional learning and strong learning habits.

Job Responsibilities include:

Teaching 6th Grade Humanities sections & Advisory; this includes:

Formally assessing and reporting on student progress three times per year using checklist/narrative report cards

Providing extra-help sessions during and after the school day, as needed

Planning and supervising field trips relevant to curriculum

Preparing advisees for and supporting them in two student-led parent conferences per year

Accompanying advisees on outdoor education trips, both day and overnight

Communication:

Effective communication with colleagues in support of a collegial and collaborative professional community

Timely and supportive communication with students, parents, and caregivers to foster a strong partnership with families

Collaboration:

Participate in regular team meetings including advising team in addition to attending faculty meetings

Contribute to curriculum development and revision

Supervisory duties as needed

Bachelor's Degree, or equivalent, preferably in a humanities-related field

Previous teaching experience in middle school desired

Compensation

Burke's offers competitive compensation with a salary range of $70,000 - $145,000 based on years of experience plus advanced degree stipends.
