Senior Thermal Engineer - Electronics & Reliability

Astranis is seeking a Senior Thermal Engineer with a strong background in electronics thermal management, reliability analysis and testing, with an interest in expanding their career into spacecraft thermal engineering (including but not exclusive to electronics packaging). You must have a strong problem-solving background, as well as experience designing and executing tests to prove the reliability of electronic components, boards and units. Experience with spacecraft thermal mitigation is not required, however an interest in learning and growing in this area is required.

Role
  • Perform thermal analysis to varying degrees of fidelity (simplified to detailed) on a variety of electronic components and assemblies to assess reliability
  • Develop standards and requirements for ensuring that the components chosen for our electronics will survive for the desired lifetime in our operating environments
  • Develop processes and procedures for integration and assembly which ensure thermal design intent is met.
  • Collaborate with the integration and test team in the installation of thermal hardware as needed.
  • Take charge of design trades that successfully balance performance margins, resource use, risk, cost, and schedule.
  • Design, evaluate, procure and test spacecraft thermal solutions such as heaters, heat pipes, thermal interface materials, and surface coatings.
  • Plan and run thermal vacuum testing and verification at the component and spacecraft level.
  • Mentor and support junior engineers.
  • Assist in recruiting, interviewing, and hiring additional teammates to our rapidly-growing team.
Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or physics
  • 6+ years of experience in a thermal/mechanical/reliability role
  • Extensive electronics derating and analysis experience
  • Knowledge of low cycle failure mechanisms (including solder fatigue) of electronic components and best practices for improving reliability
  • Experience planning and executing qual & acceptance testing as well as HALT/HASS
  • Familiar with JEDEC standards, common component materials and packages
  • A passion and enthusiasm for hardware development, including working in a fast-paced environment and hands-on design and development
  • Don't meet them all? Not a problem. Please apply even if you do not meet all these criteria.
Bonus
  • Experience with ANSYS Mechanical, ANSYS Sherlock or ANSYS IcePak
  • Experience with Thermal Desktop
  • Experience designing for a vacuum environment or environments with large temperature swings
