Job Description

The Toxins Innovation team in discovery research is seeking a self-motivated, discovery-oriented, senior research scientist with a proven industry track record in leading mass spectrometry-based protein characterization projects and initiatives. This is a senior, laboratory-based role, and the successful candidate is expected to have significant industry experience with an emphasis on driving discovery projects through important stage gates to meet business goals. The Senior Scientist I/II is responsible for identifying, developing, and implementing analytical methods for the characterization of proteins and peptides with an emphasis on mass spectrometry, including intact mass and peptide mapping. The ability to contextualize and communicate scientific findings and impact in terms of biological mechanism and project relevance is critical. Expertise in data collection and data analysis software for these assays is a requirement. Mass Spec-based proteomics and pull-down assay experience are desirable. Additional experience with analytical and separation techniques such as capillary electrophoresis (CE-SDS, cIEF) is beneficial.

He/She/They will be expected to independently identify, design, and execute research plans in support of Toxins Innovation discovery projects including collecting and interpreting detailed MS data, generating formal reports, and orally presenting findings within team-based settings. The Senior Scientist I/II will also be responsible for generating reports for management to support the advancement of discovery molecules through the research pipeline. He/She/They will serve as a functional SME for the analytics team to provide feedback and guidance to diverse cross-functional project teams. He/She/They will maintain a productive and collaborative laboratory environment consistent with group and company expectations.

The position requires the individual to work with and in areas requiring select agents and toxins access (i.e. Biosafety level 2 laboratories). Access to and use of select agents is regulated by federal policies. Therefore, the candidate must conduct all work activities in compliance with AbbVie internal and applicable regulatory requirements. AbbVie internal requirements include compliance with ethics, environmental health and safety, financial, human resources, and general business policies, requirements, and objectives.

Responsibilities:

Identify, design, and execute research plans in alignment with Toxin Innovation discovery pipeline goals. Drive cutting-edge, scientific initiatives to progress early-stage discovery molecules through major pipeline stage gates.

Effectively contextualize and communicate complex scientific data to a wide audience of scientists and SMEs.

Identify, develop, and implement novel analytical methods for the characterization of biopharmaceuticals with an emphasis on LC-MS and biophysical characterization to drive discovery projects through the research pipeline.

Represent the analytical team as a functional lead on cross-functional teams and provide support to other groups and external departments. Openly share scientific expertise and collaboratively help the team to formulate rational solutions to problems.

Maintain a thorough and current knowledge of the scientific and technical literature pertinent to the project and necessary for development of state-of-the-art analytical methods, including the acquisition and implementation of necessary equipment.
