Senior Raw Material Commodity Manager

About this Position:

Lead and manage the commodity desk from a Q/C/D/Strategic perspective. Create strategies, identify improvement opportunities, communicate effectively, gather necessary resources, assign tasks, and implement the strategy. Monitor progress and performance via plan versus actual. Resolve quality and delivery problems by working with stakeholders and suppliers. Coordinate with other areas in the organization to secure necessary resources and contributions for the strategy execution. Support meetings and prepare reports to communicate the status of the strategy within and beyond the project team.



Responsibilities include:

  • Develop and execute overall RM commodity strategy for responsible material/ commodity considering production volumes, part specification requirements, and capacity analytics. Strategy includes annual cost reduction to achieve company targets and initiatives
  • Lead supplier negotiations of cost; ensuring best practice is utilized to achieve Honda's cost target, develop and recommend opportunities to reduce cost based on the market and overall strategy, Pricing Management - develop and lead cost optimization based on usage, supplier QCDD performance, and material chemistry
  • Provide technical know-how related to raw material Q and D issues by working with stakeholders
  • Lead supply chain projects and C/D themes by working with HTA, Honda lants and suppliers; communicate across the organization to secure support and resources to execute strategies
  • Supplier Management - Development of supplier performance goals, evaluation of supplier performance and recommendation on supplier improvement plans where applicable.
  • Continuing education to support technical know-how (attend events/QAV's etc)
  • Mentor associate within team on technical know-how and fostering development




Who we are seeking:


Required Experience

  • 5+ years w/ degree or 8-10+ years without degree

Required Education

  • BS degree in Engineering, Supply Chain or 8-10+ years' experience in equivalent job

Other job-specific skills

  • Technical knowledge of manufacturing processes and quality control techniques.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Strong communication skills across multiple disciplines (engineering, suppliers, management, etc.)



Key Performance Indicators

  • Negotiate annual Raw Material pricing contracts and supply terms consistent with Honda practices and market indicators to ensure competitive pricing and stable supply.
  • Benchmark, develop, present and lead commodity strategies to Team/Dept Mgr for approval, including input from stakeholders, ensuring targets are met and PDCA is applied where applicable
  • Manage large amounts of data and organize effectively to communicate efficiently
  • Lead improvement projects/themes at a global and North American level to meet model target cost
  • Highly advanced problem-solving skills
  • Effectively manage assigned department and team level projects

    • Purchasing management, Honda factories, Honda R&D, Honda Trading

    • Raw materials suppliers and Tier 1 part suppliers who use raw materials

  • Financial dimensions: Managing 3 major commodity areas with annual spend of >$600M ( 10 suppliers)

Decisions Expected

  • Lead, review and oversee Maker layout for raw materials in mass production and new model phases
  • Implement, evaluate, develop, and lead team pricing targets for raw materials based on market analysis, setting target cost with new model design team
  • Evaluate, judge and set annual contract price and terms for raw material commodities.
  • Evaluate supply risks and execute risk mitigation activity based on potential impact
  • Evaluate and review supplier proposal, providing technical feedback related to raw material and specifications
  • Implement and lead supplier meetings/negotiations related to target achievement and cost reduction of raw material contracts, material delivery, and spec requirements


Additional Position Factors:

  • Hybrid work environment (Office base + remote work) with some travel required
  • Travel: Domestic - day trips 1-2x/mo. 1 - 2 days each; International travel unlikely but possibly Canada
  • Overtime: 10 - 15 hrs./wk. during peak activity
